The Ultimate Writer 10.19.08: Round 3 - Koscheck vs. Alves, Fedor Reality Show, and More!
Posted by Dustin James on 10.19.2008
It's Round 3 of the "The Ultimate Writer" and we have plenty to discuss. Come inside as 411's Dustin James discusses Josh Koscheck vs. Thiago Alves, the "Fighting Fedor" reality show, and lots more......
Welcome back to the best MMA column with the name "The Ultimate Writer" on the Internet. As always, I'm your main man Dustin James and just like every week.....we are here to have some fun. We are coming off of UFC 89 last night and since I write this column before the fights actually happen, I don't really have a recap or anything. Sorry, that's just the way it goes. However I'm sure Larry Csonka has a live review of the show somewhere on this here website. So without further adieu.......
Biggest News Items Of The Week:
Josh Koscheck Replaces Diego Sanchez At UFC 90
This is the big news of the week no doubt. Diego Sanchez is injured and was forced to remove himself from his upcoming UFC 90 bout with Thiago Alves and now Josh Koscheck will step in. Some people are considering this a "bummer", but I don't. I have a feeling that a Kos/Alves fight will actually be highly entertaining. Koscheck is starting to grow on me a little. After watching the first season of "The Ultimate Fighter" I thought Kos was the biggest douche on Earth. Here was this punk ass blond haired kid talking smack about Randy Couture. Really?? I mean, c'mon. If there are two people on Earth you don't talk shit about....it's Randy Couture and Anderson Silva. But now Kos steps up to the plate and takes a fight with Alves on just two weeks notice. And that's not all! Kos has also come out and said if he comes out of the Alves fight healthy, he will still fight Yoshiyuki Yoshida in December at UFC Fight Night 16 "UFC Fights For The Troops". Kos is becoming a fighter that I can respect. True, he still needs a haircut.....but we can't help him there. UFC 90 is looking sweeeeeet~!
Fedor Emelianenko Reality Show In The Works
In the "bad idea department" this week, Affliction and M-1 have announced their intentions of starting a reality show called "Fighting Fedor". The premise of the show would be similar to "The Ultimate Fighter", however the winner of the 16-man tournament doesn't win a contract. Oh no. The winner receives a beat down at the hands of the greatest heavyweight fighter in MMA history.....Fedor Emelianenko. Can that really be considered a prize? That's like going on "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader" and not winning any money, instead you win all of Jeff Foxworthy's "You Might Be a Redneck..." CD's. Seriously. Does Affliction or M-1 truly believe that an up-and-coming MMA fighter who nobody knows stands a chance against Fedor? They could probably take Kimbo Slice, but that's a whole different story.
R.I.P. to the winner of this reality show.
It's all in a name!
In this section I'm going to discuss fighter's with crazy names in MMA. You know you guys have searched Sherdog.com's "Fight Finder" and seen some wacky name that has just jumped off the page at you. Well, in this little section I'm going to grab a name each week and take an in-depth look at that fighter! Trust me, it will be fun.......
This week we will be looking at:
"The Other" Anderson Silva
Yes, it's true. Anderson "The Spider" Silva is not the only fighter in MMA with that name. There is another Anderson Silva, and guess what.....he's nothing special. I know, I know, you are all SHOCKED with that statement. But it's true. You see, this Anderson Silva is 0-1 in his MMA career and that one fight was on June 4, 2005 where he fought Jose Adriano and lost via decision at Guarafight 1. Do I know the current whereabouts of "the other" Anderson Silva? I sure don't. However, it's my belief that the UFC needs to sign this guy and have him fight "the REAL" Anderson Silva. Now that's a dream fight that at least two of us want to see.
You can check out "the other" Anderson Silva's Sherdog profile here.
Where are they now?
This feature looks at fighters who have been inactive for some time. Where exactly have they gone? I don't know and I'm reaching out to you guys to help us find these missing MMA stars......
MISSING
Ricardo Arona
You want an idea of just how dominant Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou can be? He's so scary that he knocked out Ricardo Arona back in April of 2007....and Arona hasn't fought since. Now THAT's dominant! To tell you the truth, I honestly miss Arona with a passion. The guy's record is 13-5 and he has some impressive wins over guys like Wanderlei Silva, Kazushi Sakuraba, Alistair Overeem, Dan Henderson, and Jeremy Horn. Arona at one time was considered one of the top light heavyweight fighters in the World, but due to his inactivity over the last two years, he has fallen from grace. It's my opinion that Arona will make a comeback sometime soon, possibly with a promotion like Sengoku, DREAM, or even the UFC~! Arona has yet to fight for the UFC in his career, and that seems to be the next step for him. That is, if anybody can find him. It seems he's been regulated to picking winners of upcoming UFC battles such as Wanderlei Silva vs. Rampage Jackson instead of wanting to fight. C'mon Arona, do it for your fans! It's high time you got back into the fighting game.
If you know the whereabouts of Ricardo Arona, please contact Dustin James at sickboyv1@aol.com, or go to his myspace located here.
Random Top 10 List Time!
Here you will see a random top 10 list put together by yours truly. It may be Top 10 submission fighters, Top 10 stand-up fighters, or hell, even Top 10 ways that Anderson Silva could kill you. Seriously, don't mess with that man. He's dangerous.
Top 10 Mainstream MMA guys: These are guys that I personally believe are the most marketable guys in MMA. As much as I would love to put Fedor here, he's just not well known enough amongst casual fans. Especially the ones that I run into on a consistent basis. Give it time however.
ARE YOU READY?
(PS: This list is in no particular order)
10) Georges St. Pierre - Just signed a deal that will put him in more television and possibly movie appearances. GSP is no doubt looking to branch out into the entertainment field. He's easily one of the most marketable guys in MMA. The women love him and the guys love the way he fights. Easy one here.
9) Rich Franklin - He has already appeared in a movie and remains one of the most popular fighters in the UFC.
8) Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou - Here's a man that should branch out with a few more big wins in the UFC. Sokudjou has the look of a movie star and just may be in the near future. I mean, the guy wore a Predator mask down to the Octagon!
7) Randy Couture - Has already been in a movie, and is a huge name amongst the casual fans.
6) Andrei Arlovski - Arlovski has a look that makes him widely popular, plus the guy's fangs are awesome!
5) Kimbo Slice - Kimbo may not be a great fighter, but he has the look of a fighter. That's what matters in the mainstream.
4) Chuck Liddell - Liddell is already mainstream. Hell, the guy has appeared on "Entourage"!
3) Rashad Evans - "Sugar" has a good look and can bring the charisma when he wants. His win over Liddell has no doubt pushed Evans name further into the elite fighter ranks.
2) Gina Carano - Duh?!?! She's on "American Gladiators" and is beautiful to boot.
1) Quinton "Rampage" Jackson - The guy has a great look, great charisma, and is truly a "Rampage". He was all over TMZ with his recent legal problems and is a name amongst casual fans.

Watch Out For This Guy:
In this feature I will showcase a fighter who I believe is on his way up in the MMA world......
Chris Horodecki
I remember the first time I saw Horodecki fight. It was at an IFL show in Portland back in 2006. I thought to myself "Wow, where's that little guys parents at?" and then the kid gets into the ring and defeats Ed West via unanimous decision in impressive fashion. I had to admit to myself.....the little dude has skills. He might look like he's 12, but the guy can fight. He currently has a pro record of 12-1 with his only loss coming at the hands of Ryan Schultz back in December of 2007. He defeated Bart Palaszewski twice in two amazing fights while in the IFL. Horodecki will finally fight outside of the IFL for the first time since 2006 when he faces Dan Lauzon (Joe's brother) at Affliction's next card currently rumored for January 24. Watch out for this kid. He may look like a child, but he fights like a man.

So Tito Ortiz does not figure in a top 10 most marketable fighters list? I don't like the guy, but come on! Hell you had Rashad Evans on the list..
Posted By: Samer (Guest) on October 19, 2008 at 11:04 AM
Arlovski shouldn't be on that list. His fight Roy Nelson was the only fight on the card that lost viewers, 110,000 viewers at that. I would drop him and add Forrest Griffin.
