The Ground and Pound 11.14.08: The Top 5 Biggest Upsets in UFC History
Posted by John Curry on 11.14.2008
This week the Ground and Pound looks at what it considers the top 5 biggest upsets in the UFC.
With Urijah Faber being convincingly defeated by Matt Brown this past week and this weekend's showdown between Randy Couture and Brock Lesnar which could lead to one of the biggest "upsets" in the UFC's history, it is about that time for me to evaluate what I consider to be my top five biggest upsets of all time.
5) Keith Jardine vs. Chuck Liddell
The battle between the Ultimate fighter reject and, arguably the most marketable and recognizable UFC fighter, the Iceman was supposed to be nothing more than a speed bump in the road back to the title for Chuck. What ensued was a three round battle that saw Keith Jardine pull off a win which would lead us to believe that maybe Chuck lost a step and that Jardine was championship material. Sadly, Jardine was not ready for his newfound fame and it has become apparent that maybe Chuck has lost a step. This was
4) Forrest Griffin vs. Shogun Rua
The UFC brought Shogun in to challenge Rampage for his title. Forrest was synonymous with the UFC, and one of the main reasons the UFC had risen to its then increasing popularity. Truth of the matter is that the UFC didn't really expect Forrest to beat Shogun, they just wanted him to keep the fight going long enough to introduce the casual MMA fans to Shogun in preparation for his fight with Rampage. What ensued was the solidification of Forrest Griffin as a real contender. Submission and domination by Forrest on Shogun.
3) Amir Sadollah vs. C.B. Dollaway 2 The Ultimate Fighter 7 Finale
If there was ever a definition of being overlooked it was Amir Sadollah. Amir was a guy that entered TUF 7 with a record of 0-0 and was deemed nothing more than comedy filler for the show. However, bit by bit he earned some respect until he beat favorite CB Dollaway by submission. However, it wasn't the outcome he expected. There was some controversy as to whether CB tapped or not and his win was considered lucky. As fate would have it, Amir would face CB again for the title. This time everyone expect CB to win, and I am certain even Dana White expected it. The outcome this time? The match looked almost identical to the first one and as a result a new fan favorite was born.
2) Mike Brown vs. Uriah Faber
The Golden Boy of the WEC versus the unheralded Mike Brown. The favorite was Uriah by a billion. The result was the Golden Boy being KO'd in dominant fashion. Before this fight Mike Brown was hardly a house hold name. His last fight was against the legend and the man who almost submitted Urijah, Jeff Curran while Urijah was coming off a grudge match against another legend in Jens Pulver. This fight was to be Urijah's last hurrah before either a Kid or BJ fight. With this massive loss the WEC's Golden Boy must start over from scratch and unfortunately no one saw it coming.
1)Matt Serra vs. Georges St. Pierre
This has been beaten to death but the fact is this is the biggest upset in the UFC's history. If you can think of something more don't hesitate to let me know.
WOW JOHN! Great topic, horrible colmun. First off, Ujijah was beat by Mike Brown, not Matt Brown. Matt Brown is the TUF guy fighting on the next UFC. Technically Faber/Brown was WEC, not UFC. Second, there's no way Amir vs CB should be considered one of the biggest upsets in history when Amir already beat him once before! WTF? You didn't go too far back into the past to find the biggest upsets in HISTORY, so let me help your list. Maurice Smith beating the once invicible Mark Coleman was a HUGE upset at the time. Pete Williams knocking out Mark Coleman was on the same level. Jens Pulver beating BJ Penn to retain the title was considered an upset. A no-name (at the time) Joe Lauzon knocking out Pulver was a ridiculous upset. Mark Hominik, who was something like a 800-1 longshot to beat Yve Edwards triangled the "uncrowned champ" in the first round. These are just a few examples. Again, great topic, but there's alot more history to the UFC than the last 2 years.

i agree with Bruno, great topic, horrible picks. i mean, Gonzaga vs. Cro Cop was huge at the time (and still is to some degree). Couture in 99% of his winning fights has to be considered a huge upset (Sylvia, Ortiz, Lidell 1). Vitor Belfort was considered unbeatable until Couture stopped him. Robbie Lawler getting beat by Pete Spratt. what about BJ Penn moving up in weight and choking out Matt Hughes. and as mentioned already , Pulver over Penn, Lauzon over Pulver, and Mo Smith beating Mark Coleman. the only two that i agree with off your list is Serra/GSP and Griffin/Shogun.

How is CroCop / Gonzaga not on here? It was definitely a bigger upset than the Sadollah fight, and I would argue that it's bigger than Jardine / Couture or Faber / Brown.

Though it is not necessarily the biggest upset, Gonzaga's KO of CroCop is as shocking as anything on this list.

Faber Vs Brown took place inside the UFC? Really?
I could have swore it was WEC, you could have easily said Zuffa..
And why exactly does Couture Vs Lesnar have the chance to be the biggest upset in UFC history? Is it if Couture wins? Is it if Lesnar wins? Vegas has Couture as the underdog, not by much though. I don't see it as a huge upset no matter who wins..
What about Cro Cop Vs Gonzaga? Couture Vs Sylvia? THAT was an upset.. Nobody gave Couture a chance.. Pulver Vs Lauzon?

Houston Alexander/Keith Jardine
due to the disrespect KJ gave ol' glass jaw
Chris Leben/some Brazilian dude
People thought that Leben was going to be given a patsy to walk over. Oops. This "Spider" guy can fight.

I will go with Randy Couture over Vitor Belfort. Vitor was a heavy favorite. This was even brought up on the Countdown for UFC 91. What about Sakuraba over any of the Gracies? Leben/Silva was not a huge upset. Leben was not considered this unstoppable force at the time. All the UFC fans did not know much about Silva. We learned and even got some crazy Ukulele dancing in the process. The one that gets me on the list is Sodollah vs Dollaway part 2. Sodollah already beat Dollaway once. Why should it be an upset if he did it the 2nd time? I guess Dollaway was pretty upset.

I'm guessing the column writer has only been watching MMA for 2 years. Pretty lame.
