411's MMA Rankings 11.20.08: Pound For Pound
Posted by Dustin James on 11.20.2008
UFC 91 is over and that means it's time for 411mania to rank the best pound-for-pound fighters in MMA! Where does Fedor stand? Where does Randy Couture land after his loss to Brock Lesnar? What about Lesnar? Will he make the list? 411's Dustin James gives you all the answers inside.......
UFC 91 is officially in the books and what can I say? I was way off with my predictions. Seriously, I missed the ENTIRE preliminary card yet I only missed the main event on the televised portion. However, I'm allowed one bad UFC PPV due to the fact that I finished second in 411's 2008 MMA Pick'Em Grand Prix! Anyway, what about that PPV? It was easily one of the best UFC PPV's I have ever seen and that main event was a fantastic fight. I'm not one these guys who will hate on Lesnar due to the fact that he's a former pro wrestler. I have been a fan of pro wrestling my entire life and I can only see this as a bonus for both "sports".
We also got to see Kenny Florian come out looking scary again. Seriously, where is this guy's title shot? Speaking of possible title shots, I will be surprised if Demian Maia's name isn't mentioned as a top middleweight now. UFC 91 truly was a fantastic card.....but I take it you have had your fill of the PPV for now.......
Last year at this time:
1. Fedor Emelianenko
2. Anderson Silva
3. Georges St. Pierre
4. Dan Henderson
5. Quinton "Rampage" Jackson
6. BJ Penn
7. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira
8. Gilbert Melendez
9. Matt Hughes
10. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua
Kid Yamamoto and Takanori Gomi were "On the bubble".
411's MMA Ranking Rules
- If a fighter hasn't fought in a year, he can not be ranked. It's not fair to people who are fighting to not be ranked because a fighter is taking a year off. The rule also applies to specific divisions. If a fighter hasn't fought in a weight division in a year he is no longer eligible to be ranked. However, if a fighter schedules a fight he is still eligible for being ranked.
- If you wish to complain about a fighter's ranking in the comments section, then please include an objective reason as to why you don't like the ranking, and remember "if u rite lik thiss" then your opinion doesn't matter.
- 411's MMA Rankings are voted on by the MMA staff of 411mania. So if you are an MMA fighter and hate where you are ranked, beating just me up would be unnecessary. You would have to beat us all up, and when we are all together.....we could all get our asses kicked by ONE of Brock Lesnar's fists. They are THAT scary.
411's MMA Rankings
Pound For Pound
1) Anderson Silva (23-4)
Height: 6'2
Birthday: April 14, 1975
Currently Fighting With: UFC
Last 5 fights:
- vs. Patrick Cote - Win via TKO (injured knee) - UFC 90: Silva vs. Cote - October 25, 2008
- vs. James Irvin - Win via KO (punches) - UFC: Fight Night 14 - July 19, 2008
- vs. Dan Henderson - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - UFC 82: Pride of a Champion - March 1, 2008
- vs. Rich Franklin - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 77: Hostile Territory - October 20, 2007
- vs. Nathan Marquardt - Win via TKO (strikes) - UFC 73: Stacked - July 7, 2007
Next scheduled appearance:
- vs. Currently unknown
Comments: Another "pound for pound" rankings list, another victory for Anderson "The Spider" Silva. Even after what some people would call a "lackluster" fight against Patrick Cote, Silva remains atop the rankings list. Current rumors have Anderson Silva possibly fighting Chuck Liddell at UFC 95 in a fight that I would love to see. I mean, c'mon. Silva wants to retire soon so why not go all out and schedule some "superfights" for the guy? Liddell could be past his prime now, but it would be a fight that would get the UFC a tremendous amount of PPV buys regardless of Liddell's losses. In the end, it's all about money and don't be surprised to see the UFC book this fight.
2) Fedor Emelianenko (28-1)
Height: 6'0
Weight: 233
Currently fighting with: Affliction
Last 5 fights:
- vs. Tim Sylvia - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - Affliction "Banned" - July 19, 2008

- vs. Matt Lindland - Win via submission (arm bar) - BodogFight: Clash of the Nations - April 14, 2007
- vs. Mark Hunt - Win via submission (kimura) - PRIDE - Shockwave 2006 - December 31, 2006
- vs. Mark Coleman - Win via submission (arm bar) - PRIDE 32: The Real Deal - October 21, 2006
Next scheduled appearance:
- vs. Andrei Arlovski - Affliction: Day Of Reckoning - January 24, 2009
Comments: Fedor made some noise recently by announcing that he would be down for a "superfight" against new UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar. Don't get all excited just yet kiddies. This one falls along the line of the Fedor/Couture rumors......I'll believe it when I see it.
3) Georges St. Pierre (17-2)
Height: 5'10
Birthday: May 19, 1981
Currently Fighting With: UFC
Last 5 fights:
- vs. Jon Fitch - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 87: Seek And Destroy - August 9, 2008

- vs. Matt Serra - Loss via TKO (strikes) - UFC 69: Shootout - April 7, 2007
Next scheduled appearance:
- vs. BJ Penn - UFC 94: St. Pierre vs. Penn - January 31, 2009
Comments: We are just about two months away from seeing a fight that will have a huge impact on the pound for pound rankings. GSP and BJ Penn are both in the top 5 of the majority of people's rankings. With a loss one of these guys could fall and make room for somebody else in the top 5. GSP is still receiving #1 votes from people on our staff, so he does have his supporters who feel the guy is the top dog in MMA.
4) B.J. Penn (13-4-1)
Height: 5'9
Birthday: December 13, 1978
Currently Fighting With: UFC
Last 5 fights:
- vs. Sean Sherk - Win via TKO (knees and punches) - UFC 84: Ill Will - May 24, 2008
- vs. Joe Stevenson - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - UFC 80: Rapid Fire - January 19, 2008
- vs. Jens Pulver - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - Ultimate Fighter 5 Finale - June 6, 2007
- vs. Matt Hughes - Loss via TKO (strikes) - UFC 63: Hughes vs. Penn - September 23, 2006
- vs. Georges St. Pierre - Loss via decision (split) - UFC 58: USA vs. Canada - March 4, 2006
Next scheduled appearance:
- vs. Georges St. Pierre - UFC 94: St. Pierre vs. Penn - January 31, 2009

- vs. Fabricio Werdum - Win via decision (unanimous) - PRIDE - Critical Countdown Absolute - July 1, 2006
Next scheduled appearance:
- vs. Frank Mir - UFC 92: Mir vs. Nogueria - December 27, 2008
Comments: Are we looking at the man who will stop the "UFC train" known as Brock Lesnar? OK, so I'm getting a little ahead of myself.....it's just......I can't see Big Nog losing to either Lesnar or Mir. I'm 95% confident that Big Nog will defeat Mir next month, and sometime in March or so we will get Lesnar vs. Nog and Nog may actually be the underdog in that fight. Could Lesnar really finish a guy who has NEVER been finished in his career? Nog has faced guys like Mirko Cro Cop, Fedor Emelianenko, Dan Henderson, and Josh Barnett and never been finished. Oh, and Nog's four losses in his career? They come at the hands of Fedor (twice), Henderson, and Barnett. I'm just saying.........
6) Miguel Torres (34-1)
Height: 5'9
Birthday: January 18, 1981
Currently Fighting With: WEC
Last 5 Fights:
- vs. Yoshiro Maeda - Win via TKO (doctor stoppage) - WEC 34: Sacramento - June 1, 2008
- vs. Chase Beebe - Win via submission (guillotine choke) - WEC 32: Albuquerque - February 13, 2008
- vs. Jeff Bedard - Win via submission (triangle choke) - WEC 30: Las Vegas - September 5, 2007
- vs. Darius Turcinskas - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - IMMAC 2: Attack - April 21, 2007
- vs. Charles Wilson - Win via submission (triangle choke) - TFC 7 - February 10, 2007
Next scheduled appearance:
-vs. Manny Tapia - WEC 37 - December 3, 2008
Comments: We are just a few weeks away from a fight that is a huge one for MMA's bantamweight division. If you are unfamiliar with Miguel Torres and the bantamweight division, I highly suggest you check out WEC 37 on Versus this December 3. I guarantee you will become a massive Torres fan right off the bat.
7) Lyoto Machida (13-0)
Height: 6'1
Birthday: May 3, 1978
Currently Fighting With: UFC
Last 5 fights:
- vs. Tito Ortiz - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 84: Ill Will - May 24, 2008
- vs. Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou - Win via submission (arm triangle choke) - UFC 79: Nemesis - December 29, 2007
- vs. Kazuhiro Nakamura - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 76: Knockout - September 22, 2007
- vs. David Heath - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 70: Nations Collide - April 21, 2007
- vs. Sam Hoger - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 67: All or Nothing - February 3, 2007
Next scheduled appearance:
- vs. Thiago Silva - UFC 94: St. Pierre vs. Penn - January 31, 2009
Comments: And the Machida/Thiago Silva "Battle of the undefeated" is BACK on! The only bad thing is we will have to wait until Super Bowl weekend to see this fight. Will the winner of this fight finally get a title shot?
8) Forrest Griffin (16-4)
Height: 6'3
Currently Fighting With: UFC
Last 5 fights:
- vs. Quinton Jackson - Win by decision (unanimous) - UFC 86: Jackson vs. Griffin - July 5, 2008
- vs. Mauricio Rua - Win by submission (rear naked choke) - UFC 76: Knockout - September 22, 2007
- vs. Hector Ramirez - Win by decision (unanimous) - UFC 72: Victory - July 16, 2007
- vs. Keith Jardine - Loss by TKO (punches) - UFC 66: Liddell vs. Ortiz 2 - December 30, 2006
- vs. Stephan Bonnar - Win via decision (unanimous) - UFC 62: Liddell vs. Sobral - August 26, 2006
Next scheduled appearance:
- vs. Rashad Evans - UFC 92: Mir vs. Nogueria - December 27, 2008
Comments: And it's almost here! The winners of "The Ultimate Fighter" season 1 and 2 will finally square off in just a little over a month! Can Rashad Evans do it again? Can he stay undefeated and take out Griffin who is on a ROLL right now? Griffin's last two victories are over top notch guys in the UFC's light heavyweight division yet this fight with Evans may be his biggest one yet.
9) Urijah Faber (21-2)
Height: 5'6
Birthday: May 14, 1979
Currently Fighting With: WEC
Last 5 Fights:
- vs. Mike Brown - Loss via TKO (punches) - WEC 36: Faber vs. Brown - November 5, 2008
- vs. Jens Pulver - Win via decision (unanimous) - WEC 34: Sacramento - June 1, 2008
- vs. Jeff Curran - Win via submission (guillotine choke) - WEC 31 - Faber vs. Curran - December 12, 2007
- vs. Chance Farrar - Win via submission (rear naked choke) - WEC 28 - WrekCage - June 3, 2007
- vs. Dominic Cruz - Win via submission (guillotine choke) - WEC 26 - Las Vegas - March 24, 2007
Next scheduled appearance:
- vs. Jose Aldo/Leonard Garcia - WEC 38 - January 25, 2009 (RUMORED)
Comments: Even after an upset loss to Mike Brown at WEC 36, Faber is still considered a top pound for pound fighter. The guy got caught. That's basically the only way to explain his loss. He went in for a crazy elbow strike and got caught by a vicious hit from Brown. It's not like Brown wasn't considered a top 10 featherweight anyways. Faber will learn from his mistakes and get right back on track.
10) Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (16-3)
Birthday: November 25, 1981
Currently Fighting With: UFC
Last 5 fights:
- vs. Forrest Griffin - Loss via submission (rear naked choke) - UFC 76: Knockout - September 22, 2007
- vs. Alistair Overeem - Win via KO (strikes) - PRIDE 33: Second Coming - February 24, 2007
- vs. Kazuhiro Nakamura - Win via decision (unanimous) - PRIDE Shockwave 2006 - December 31, 2006
- vs. Kevin Randleman - Win via submission (kneebar) - PRIDE 32: The Real Deal - October 21, 2006
- vs. Cyrille Diabate - Win via TKO (stomps) - PRIDE - Final Conflict Absolute - September 10, 2006
Next scheduled appearance:
- vs. Mark Coleman - UFC 93: Henderson vs. Franklin - January 17, 2008
Comments: Nothing new on "Shogun". What can I say? The dude's busy training for his UFC 93 fight against UFC Hall-of-Famer Mark Coleman.
On The Bubble:
(On the bubble includes fighter's who may not be in the Top 10, but remain a threat in their weight division)
Quinton Jackson (28-7)
Height: 6'1

- vs. Mike Van Arsdale - Win via submission (anaconda choke) - UFC 54: Boiling Point - August 20, 2005
...Forrest beats the #2 and #1 LHW fighters in the world and gets placed behind Lyoto, who hasn't beaten a top 5.
Not that that matters, since they're both way behind a guy who hasn't beaten a top 10 fighter in 5 years (Penn).
A fighter should be graded on their actual accomplishments, not how much you like them or think they can or should have done. Losing (repeatedly) in a weight class and beating up other guys who also couldn't make it in that same weight class doesn't make them a better fighter.

so perfectly said cyks....for some reason mma rankings defy logic. The strange thing is it is one of the few sports where who is a better fighter is usually pretty clear to see.
Posted By: guest (Guest) on November 20, 2008 at 01:19 AM
I don't understand how BJ Penn, and Forrest Griffen can be on here, with each having one to two losses yet Rashad Evans, who has only a draw on his record and no loss, also happens to just come off of what may be the knockout of freaking century! Yet Griffen recieved a title shot because let's face it, Griffen is the most popular of the TUF crew! Sure he beat Shogun, but let's not forget he's also lost to Jardine. BJ Penn on the other hand, is a shadow of his former self.
Posted By: kurruption (Guest) on November 20, 2008 at 01:45 AM
First three I'm with you then you guys go nuts.
Penn while a bad ass shouldnt be ranked hire then Nog. Nog hasnt lost a fight since sept of 2006 and that was split desicion. Your trying to tell me that wins over Steveson Pulver and sherk out weigh Barnett, Silva, herring and Werdum? How did Shogun even make the list? Didnt you have to fight in the last year to be ranked HMMM? Add win as well. Rampage should atleast be on the list if Shogun is hell, Shogun shouldnt even be on the radar. Wheres Rashad, Lyoto but not Rashad SHOGUN but not rashad or Thiego or rambage. WTH Racists :). Joke.. Kid yamoto on the BUBBLE? Where's mayhem miller, Mousai, etc this is so far off I'm just going to stop. Shakes head... On a non bashing 411 moment If you dont know torres you suck. I comend you on that I just like the guy not sure about P4P but hey on the bubble defiantly. No back to the bashing Randy is out for more than a year comes back losses and is on the bubble? Anybody else think this is a pretty crappy ranking? No kenflo its official you guys really have a problem. I'd put kenflo over Bj right now. Oh and I agree with cyks though I dont like it Griffin should be higher. IMO
Posted By: Guest#9820 (Guest) on November 20, 2008 at 02:39 AM
come on with the shogun rankings! he will probably beat mark coleman, who is so old and washed up, and provide more reason for him to be ranked in the top ten. Wait until he proves himself against the best. What about rich franklin, who has beaten him besides anderson silva?
Posted By: bob (Guest) on November 20, 2008 at 08:02 AM
These rankings have to do with a fighter's skillset, not necessarily who he's beaten. How's Rashad's jiujitsu? Non-existent you say? That's the point exactly. Those guys at the top all have extremely good grappling and striking, hence a high P4P ranking.
Posted By: punchdrunk (Registered) on November 20, 2008 at 09:35 AM
Once again I have to point out that based on eligibility from the 411 staffers, why is Shogun still ranked?? He hasn't fought in a year and you guys even state that it wouldn't be fair to rank a guy who hasn't fought in a year. What the FUCK!!
Glad to see Hendo off the top 10 and where the hell is Rich Franklin who's only losses in the UFC are against the top dogg Anderson Silva.
THIS LIST BLOWS!!!
Posted By: jj Abraham (Guest) on November 20, 2008 at 09:57 AM
Meh, Urijah should still be ranked. His loss was a fluke!
Posted By: BurritoFueled (Guest) on November 20, 2008 at 11:36 AM
All you guys complaining that Shogun hasn't fought in over a year are missing the next sentence in the intro that says "However, if a fighter schedules a fight he is still eligible for being ranked". Now whether or not Shogun deserves to be in the top 10, that's another issue altogether.
Posted By: JimmyCrazyPants (Guest) on November 20, 2008 at 11:47 AM
Like the JJ stated, how is Shogun listed when he hasn't fought in 14 months? Come on, at least follow the rules you've established. Do you guys even edit your articles before posting them? Sorry to criticize but that's a lazy mistake.
Posted By: Guest#6466 (Guest) on November 20, 2008 at 11:55 AM
Why isn't Lesnar at least on the bubble? This guy is a freak of nature. His size is part of what makes him so dominant. Ask Heath Herring and Rand Couture just how important his size is. He's constantly improving and evolving and there's nobody short of Fedor that I think can beat him right now. Focus, determination and raw natural ability should be part of the equation here.
Posted By: King Durin (Guest) on November 20, 2008 at 12:18 PM
I'm curious to know if I'm in the minority of people who thinks that being ranked the top pound for pound fighter in the world should be based on your ENTIRE career and not on 'what have you done for me lately?' I completey agree with keeping a guy off the list if he hasn't fought in a year - that's fine. I'm talking about ranking Fedor 2nd to Anderson Silva just because Silva's fought more in the last 2 years or so. Fedor's lost 1 fight, by a fluke cut, so one can make the argument he's never truly been beaten. Look at his track record: sure he doesn't fight as much as Silva, but Silva's lost 4 times in his career. Okay, yes he lost his first fight and last lost due to an illegal kick against Okami, and even that goes back a few years now...I just think until Fedor finally loses a fight via TKO, submission or decision, he should be number 1. So am I one of the few or one the many who thinks this?
Posted By: Jon (Guest) on November 20, 2008 at 12:19 PM
jon,
go on youtube and watch "Fedor vs Ricardo Arona" I know at the end Fedor wins a joke of a decison. but watch the fight and you wont hink Fedor has never been dominated before. yup, i said it. Fedor was "DOMINATED" for 3 rnds. Even Fedor fans that seen the fight say it
Posted By: wolf137 (Guest) on November 20, 2008 at 02:43 PM
Seriously, what are you guys smoking? Shogun? Really? His last win was in Feb. 2007. You really think he is THAT much better of a fighter right NOW, at this very moment, than Rashad, Rich Franklin, KenFlo, etc., guys that do not even appear on the bubble? Really? Why not include Royce Gracie if hanging on to glory days long past is the criteria. I love Randy as much as the next fan, but P4P? Hendo? Really? I'm not so much concerned with active in the last 12 months as a criteria, but I think the fighter should have at least been succesful enough recently to suggest they are P4P. Losing in your most recent fights against quality opponents seems to be the one criteria that would remove someone from the P4P list because it begs the argument of why the guy that just beat the fighter isn't also on the list, and higher. And barely squeeking out a decision against a no-name, lay on your back fighter doesn't scream best P4P to me. But hey, what do I know?

Woah, the virgins are ANGRY!
Posted By: IIIINNTERNET (Guest) on November 20, 2008 at 07:14 PM
FIRST -
p4p rankings are ok for conversation, but c'mon, they mean absolutely nothing...it's a marketing ploy at best. To get passionately angry about these things is absurd, even if you don't agree with the logic behind the rankings.
SECOND -
"jon,
go on youtube and watch "Fedor vs Ricardo Arona" I know at the end Fedor wins a joke of a decison. but watch the fight and you wont hink Fedor has never been dominated before. yup, i said it. Fedor was "DOMINATED" for 3 rnds. Even Fedor fans that seen the fight say it
Posted By: wolf137 (Guest) on November 20, 2008 at 02:43 PM"
Only someone who is biased against fedor would say that he was dominated...it was a close fight that fedor won, but at that point in his career fedor wasn't going to get any gifts from japanese judges...now wolfy, name a round since that fight that fedor has lost...you can't. because it hasn't happened. yeah, homeboy hasn't lost a round since that fight. keep hating.
THIRD -
Anyone that denies bj's spot hates the dude and is biased...you really lose all credibility if you try to say that he isn't one of the top four fighters in the sport. bj didn't look like a shadow of his former self when he joined a pretty exclusive club...only bj, gsp and matt hughes can claim victories over sean sherk.
Fourth -
I hate these p4p conversations, but i think that i would hate them a little less if heavyweights weren't included...p4p, they're already heavyweights! The recognized heavyweight champ is the man...he doesn't need to be considered p4p, 'cause he's the man....let's leave these rankings for the smaller fellas.
Posted By: romano (Guest) on November 20, 2008 at 08:08 PM
This is a stupid column
How the hell do you judge people based on different weight classes. You might as well roll a dice
Posted By: Kent Baker (Guest) on November 20, 2008 at 08:45 PM
This list does blow nowhere on this list is the next UFC champion Matt "The Hammer" Hamill. Watch out Brock!!!!
Posted By: mmatrainer315 (Guest) on November 20, 2008 at 08:48 PM
Lyoto Machida has beat Rich Franklin at light heavyweight. Franklins first loss ever. Also he has beaten BJ Penn to.
As far as Fedor goes yeah I'm no fan of him. I do give him props for kicking the crap out Timmaa. But after that he has beaten a Top 10 heavyweight since the pride days.
Anderson Silva on the other hand yeah lost 4 fights but still faced more Top 10 middleweights and beaten them all. Along with going into another division to fight. Hence why he is the man.
