Hit the Mat 12.08.08: Peering Into the Crystal Ball
Posted by Matt McEwen on 12.08.2008

So, 2008 was quite the interesting year.

Brock Lesnar went from hype to bust to champion, all in the span of about 10 months. Kimbo Slice went from super hype to bust in a mere 17 seconds, and there doesn't seem to be a title of redemption in his future. Randy Couture went from trying to get a fight with Fedor, to returning to the UFC and losing his return and his title to fore-mentioned Lesnar. Chuck Liddell continued his slide, Forrest Griffin continued his climb. Elite XC died a slow, painful death, and Affliction put on one show, cancelled another and may not make it past their next.

You get the point…pretty bloody eventful year. Of course, now that it's the middle of December – and I fully expect that holiday booze may adversely affect the quality of my writing for the next few weeks – it's time to look ahead and see what might be in store for 2009. Everybody does it, but I get the honor of putting out there for the world to see….and to check in the archives a year from now and see how far up my behind my head is right now…

Brock Lesnar will go undefeated for the year

Ok, so I'm not starting out too far on a limb really.

We know his first fight is going to be against the winner of Mir/Nogeuria, and we know the weakest part of his game is submission defense, but I can not see either of them beating Lesnar right now. Now, before I get killed here, when I say submission defense is the weakest part of Lesnar's game, I don't mean just because Mir subbed him in his UFC debut. If you haven't trained submissions ever in your life prior to the age of 30, and you are taking on BJJ black belts, well, yeah, it's going to be a weak point.

But Lesnar's freakish brute strength should be a deciding factor as he will be able to avoid positions and power out of some bad spots.

I'd imagine he'd have two other title defenses throughout the year, though against who is a bit harder to say. I'm on record saying I'd pick Shane Carwin over Lesnar right now, but if they were to fight next December, all bets are off…

Anderson Silva will lose in 2009

There are a few factors that go into this:

1. He is getting older. As we've seen time and time again, it's the strikers in this sport that seem to suffer the more dramatic drop off's in ability. At 33, Silva is by no means washed up, but he's no spring chicken either.
2. All the retirement talk. Where there's smoke, there's fire….especially if the subject of all the talk does nothing at all to put any of the fire out. Silva has been dominant since winning the title, and it could be that he's getting bored or knows that you can only be so good for so long. He may not want to go the Chuck Liddell route, and lose 3 of 4.
3. The showing against Cote. I realize Cote has big power, and you have to respect that, but the Silva that showed up in that fight was not the usual Silva. He was easily winning the fight, but he was fighting quite differently. When you look at #2, #3 becomes a bit more concerning.
4. The competition. He's staring a dream match with GSP in the face, and the move to 205 is opening up a lot of interesting possibilities. With that much talent in the wings, how long can one man go undefeated? (Complete conjecture here, but what if Silva moves up to 205 and Couture moved down? That could be interesting.)

Chuck Liddell will retire

At least…I hope he does. It always sucks to watch someone hang around too long, and it tarnishes their image in the short term whenever they do (Jerry Rice, I'm looking at you.) Liddell may not be totally there just yet, but he is getting close. If he loses his next fight, I imagine his gloves will be going on the mantle…..for a year or so until he comes back.

Lyoto Machida will get a title shot….and a title

If you read my pound for pound article last week, you'll know I think pretty highly of "The Dragon", and given his comments of the past week, so does Dana White. My opinion may not mean too much, but when White suggests you're the second best fighter on the planet, that's a good thing. If he gets by Thiago Silva – and I'm willing to accept all monetary bets that he does – it will be hard to deny Machida a shot at the winner of this month's Griffin/Evans showdown. And, to further my hypothesis, I'd find it hard to pick either of those guys over Machida.

Affliction will be no more

Can we officially call Affliction FC a bad idea yet? Yes, a few good fights have come up as a result of the t-shirt company getting into the promotion business, but one show for the entire year, a cancelled show and a promotion built entirely around a great fighter who no casual fans know might not have been the best business plan.

After Fedor dismantles Arlovski in January, they have only one big fight left – Barnett/Fedor – but they've done little to build Barnett up and is there any chance they'll be in a financial position to put another show on? It's back to the clothing biz me thinks…

The UFC video game will be released, and it will not be good.

I'm not a huge gamer, but wrestling/fighting games tend to have very little replay value. I'm sure they've done some sort of fantastic ground breaking something or other for the game, but it still won't be that fun. In the end, people will look back and say "You almost fired Jon Fitch for this drek?"

They may not be ground breaking guesses here, but if you could predict all the shocking things that will happen, then they wouldn't be that shocking right?

One thing is for sure though – when it comes to MMA, the unpredictable is usually the standard, and 2009 is unlikely to be any different.

" on record saying I'd pick Shane Carwin over Lesnar right now"

So basically you're telling us that CARWIN who is absolutely UNPROVEN and has NEVER EVER Fought out a TOP 10 HW hell not a Top 15-20 at all, WOULD BE ABLE TO DO What, IN YOUR OPINION, the SECOND GREATEST HEAVY OF ALL TIME could not ?

WHAT A JOKE.....

lesnar is not a proven fighter either, who did he beat someone who is super old and not fought in over a year, who he is 60 pounds heavier, lesnar is a bum fighter, the kimbo of ufc.

Lesnar's brute strength is an asset in the submission game - but if he's facing Nog (and I think he will be) remember that Nog did armbar Bob Sapp. True, 'Beast' might not have been quite as strong as Lesnar, but omg the dude was huge! If Nog could armbar him, I think he'd be able to armbar anyone not named Fedor.

First of all what the hell Lesnar beat your god of MMA in Randy Couture. Duke Jason Lesnar has raw natural ability he is only going to get better. I see lesnar not losing until he is ready to lose and do something else. I see Fedor being the only one to contend also couture came in after more than a year of retirement and beat Tim Sylvia. Lesnar is 4 fights into his career and he won the championship. Dana White likes him and so do I. Him winning is just proving both of us right.

@ THE AGENT

First off, Couture is not my "god of MMA". Fedor is. As for Lesnar not losing until he's "ready to lose", how in the hell do get ready to lose? Brock will be what is called a "transitional champion". In other words, probably wont last one title defense as champion. Also, Fedor is the only one who can beat Lesnar? No, sir. Have you forgotten a man called Frank Mir. The same Frank Mir who made your favorite fighter tap like a bitch.

You said Anderson Silva would lose, SHAME!

Thiago Silva - Next UFC Light Heavyweight Champ

Pift.

I got $50 that says Thiago Silva beats "Manchida".

Lesnar got caught in a last ditch move by Mir to save his face from further pounding...when it really comes down to it, Mir may have got the W, but Brock won that fight. Now with his submission training, Mir wouldn't go 45 secs with Brock.

Now Nog may be a challenge, but sorry, an armbar isn't going to put Brock away, especially when he can just lift you off the mat with the bar on.

Lesnar will be champ until they sign Fedor, and by that point...it may be too late.

Posted By: Ramsey (Guest)  on December 08, 2008 at 09:19 AM

Ramsey: Mir caught Lesnar IN THE MIDDLE OF GETTING HIS ASS BEAT DOWN. Lesnar, being a smart fighter with scary smart trainers, has been training sub game since day one. However, there is no way, shape or form he can go head-to-head with a BJJ black belt like Mir or Nog. And as for lifting a man up with the armbar on... Dude, have someone armbar you for real and see if you can even _think_ about lifting the guy up, whether you're able to do it or not. If either Nog or Mir gets a sub tight on him, it's time to ring the bell.

Lesnar holding the title until... forever? There's no telling IF Fedor ever sets foot in a UFC cage. As for how long he'll hold the belt, a little history is in order: No one has had more than two succesful title defenses in a single title reign in the UFC HW division. No one - and only Couture, Sylvia and Arlovski have made two straight succesful defenses. A mathematical average says that a champ has defended the title succesfully 0,67 times before losing it. Only Couture has had three title reigns, Sylvia has had two. Everyone else hasn't seen the belt again.

If Brock beats Mir or Nog, my hat's off to him. But before that match happens, let's keep things in perspective, shall we?

Here's my prediction: Lesnar will beat Nog and then everyone will complain and say Nog was going over the hill anyways. Infact, everyone Lesnar beats in 2009 will be considered either over the hill or overrated. Eventually, the entire HW division will be branded a farce as Lesnar streamrolls over it.

In regards to Anderson Silva losing in 2009; I believe the competition in itself has a lot to say as well. When you look at what Liddell did before the merger of Pride, Liddell fought guys who were tailer made for his style, which were grapplers with weak striking. once Liddell faced off against formidable strikers, he started losing. Silva on the other hand is in the same boat, he has faced off against mostly strikers. His only tough BJJ match was against Lutter and in that match, Silva got mounted by Lutter which still might be his toughest test in the UFC to date. I believe that if Silva were to face off against some of the tougher BJJ fighters, he may get submitted especially if it's against Maia or Palhares.

I am a powerlifting enthusiast and Lesnar as someone mentioned earlier is not stronger than Bob Sapp. True Lesnar has more skills, but his strength is a little over exaggerated by most people who basically look at his size and say, "yea this guy can lift a mountain no problem". No doubt he is big and very powerful, but he is human and if he got caught in a good armbar, there's no doubt in my mind he would tap rather than risk a broken arm by trying to slam someone while locked in. I don't care how strong you are, but if your arm is fully extended and someone with great skills has their legs wrapped around one end while using both of their arms on the other end forcing your joint into the opposite direction, it's tap or snap!

The fight with Machida and Thiago can go either way, I don't think it's safe to say Machida will be champ until after this fight. This is just one of those fights that gets me nervous especially if you are a fan of Machida.

I just have to say that regarding the video game comment, there is no MMA game out there that is any good and there is no reason to believe that this one will be any different except for the graphics. There are too many grappling moves and the health meter always diminishes too fast resulting in quick matches. Hopefully this game will be worth getting into this huge debacle with Jon Fitch for.

ok brock WILL indeed lose his first title defense. this is how it will go down...mir is going to lose to nog, then nog will take on lesnar and beat him as well.

i say this because big nog has faced the best of the best in pride. he has never been koed or submitted and has never lost to anyone not named fedor. the only way fedor even beat him was via decision..both times

@ MR. MACK
First of all by ready to lose I mean leave because lesnar has been known to up and quit wwe and nfl. He gets tired once its no longer a challenge. True I dont see lesnar beating Fedor but I dont see fedor coming to UFC he wants one fight deals or interpromotional and over 1 million a fight it aint going to happen soon and by that time lesnar should be somewhat trained in sub defense and even some bjj and by then everyone will be claiming fedor was over the hill when lesnar beats him lesnar is the future of the hw division and as i said before dana knew it and thats why he got his shot so soon and mir was getting his ass kicked when he lucked out and caugt a foot will not happen again.

You are completely wrong about the UFC video game and that wrestling/fighting games have no replay value. FIRST, did you ever play WCW vs NWO for Nintendo 64???? Because if you had, you would know that that was one of the best games of all time, a game that you could still have fun playing today, like mario cart. Furthermore, a ufc game in today's next gen graphics and game play will be a huge success and ridiculously fun. And if you are able to make your own fighter and play through a career, watch out, i could play forever. The sound and animations on the game make you feel like you are actually watching a live fight. THQ is designing it, and they haven't put it out in a hurry. They have been designing it for a while now, and it's nice to know they didn't just rush to put it out. This UFC game will rock and I think you will bite your words soon enough. Still won't be that fun????? you = crazy man

Lets face facts on Mir vs Lesnar. Yeah Mir(one of my favorite fighters)caught Brock in the kneebar but he also spent the first part of the fight almost entirely in the fetal position
