Liddell to Sit Out Until At Least April 2010
Posted by Dan Plunkett on 07.04.2009

After losing four of his last five, including three losses by knockout, former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Chuck Liddell has decided to at least take a while off. "[I won't fight again] for at least a year or so, just to let my head rest," Liddell told SI.com.

With his last loss coming in April, that would leave Liddell out of the picture until April of 2010 at the least. By that time, Liddell would be 40 years old, but he isn't planning on sitting around for a year.

"Hopefully my brain can heal over time," he went on. "The shot last fight is something that normally wouldn't hurt me. I think I need at least some time off from getting hit. I'm going to take time off sparring then. I'll train still. Still gonna roll. I'll probably do a little more jiu-jitsu than normal because I like it. It's fun."

As for retirement talk, "The Iceman" says he hasn't made a decision on whether or not to continue his illustrious career.

Chuck needs to take a year off to practice his commentating skills and protect himself against being Ali replica

Chuck has the right idea here; lay off the sparring and getting hit in the head, and work on his grappling. It'll help round out his game.

Watch as whatever fight he is offered, even if it is against a top 5 fighter, Chuck will still be heavily favored on the internet. I remember the ramblings of a Liddell-Franklin fight and people were ALREADY saying how Franklin had no chance. Why Liddell managed to remain the overwhelming favorite in every fight even after Rampage II I don't know.

Very good idea and maybe take some time and work with young fighters too, Chuck's got alot of experience and can really help them out.

Franklin isn't really an elite fighter, I'd favor Liddell over him. Franklin doesn't really have anything to take advantage of Liddell's declining chin and speed, so Liddell would eventually catch him imo.

I wouldn't favore Liddell against Machida, Page, Shogun etc.

Liddell vs. Cro Cop vs. Wanderlei Silva in a 3 way match! That would be something original for MMA.

It's about time that one of the MMA promotions starts a tag team division too. Still keep it a shoot, like wrestling was back in the early 1900's before it became a work, but have tag teams to add some variety.

Take all the time you need to try and refine and brush up your outdated "rush" technique. You're not gonna win.

Lidell vs Slice isn't as far away as you may think..

"The shot last fight is something that normally wouldn't hurt me."

What? Has he not seen the video? He got rocked by a punch he wasn't fast enough to defend against.

It's not your chin that's getting you into trouble these days, Chuck. It's your speed. You're not quick anymore...

Okay, so he never was particularly "quick" so to speak, but he had the ability to slip and counter-punch - and that's lacking now. When you're a counter-puncher who can't counter-punch it's time to either quit (before you get killed) or find a new way to fight.

I just don't think it's going to happen though. He talked about concentrating on defense before the Rua fight, but his hands had already dropped out of defensive posture just over a minute into it.

He's been fighting 'Liddell style' for too long to change now.

Chuck is out for a year because of the contract with UFC. He is under contract for one more fight, and since UFC does not want let him fight, he has to wait until contract expires ...
