Mirko Cro Cop Talks Retirement
Posted by Bill Wannop on 09.21.2009

Mirko Cro Cop conducted an interview with Jutarnji.hr, below are the highlights:

On his body: "Maybe the ones who have said that I'm done are right. Obviously, I can't break my mental block in the Octagon. Besides, I've been training like a spartan for 20 years now — my body is worn out. The years caught up to me, I've been worn out."

On Santos beating him: "[Junior dos Santos] won that fight and would have won it by decision. Simply put, he is younger, more hungry, more aggressive. He wanted to win a lot more."

On losing his hunger: "The mat was slippery like glass. I almost fell down trying to do the left high kick. But I'm not looking for an alibi. This was not the performance the public would pay for. I don't feel the hunger anymore. I started playing it safe, I'm not ready to take risks. I would like to thank everybody that supported me and stood by me and everyone who helped me to prepare for this fight. I've been living a military life for 20 years now. Getting up at 6 a.m. and having physically challenging task up to 8 p.m. I want a normal life. I'm entering a cage and thinking about fishing in Privlaka. You can't win that way. Maybe I should've quit after I won the open weight grand prix."

..great fighter in K1 & Pride, great fights against Fedor, Randleman, he would have deserved a run in UFC, mirko looked so weak on saturday - how many left kicks did he do? One or two, and nothing conncted - hard to watch him stumbling around, i feel sorry for him, no stand-up anymore, verbal tap? wtf mirko? dont leave like that, go down to LHW and give us some good fights, please.

I still don't know why they even brought him back in the first place. He didn't really do much against Al-Turk before the eye poke, and he didn't do shit before that fight before he left the first time around.

If they want to throw tons of money at someone, there are much better fighters out there to do it at. Cro Cop is done, he's been done for awhile. He can't fight in the octagon, plain and simple. No disrespect, but please - can this guy and sweep him under the mat while you can. He'll never go anywhere in *this* HW division, and he certainly won't be challenging for the title anytime soon either.

Fair play to the guy for his honesty. He could have had an injury excuse, training being disrupted etc, but he has been completely honest in that he doesn't want it any more. Got my respect.

I was at UFC 103 and it looked worse live I promise you that. The fight in the stands that ended with both fighters falling down two sections of stairs was more entertaining.

As sad as it makes me to hear it, he needs to retire unless he wants to crush the legacy he has built.

That was unbelievably honest. The 2006 Open Weight GP was incredible. He broke Wanderlei when it seemed impossible to do so.
He's also not lying about the military lifestyle, I recall there was talk that he was over exhausting himself by fighting 3 or 4 times a year for years straight while in Pride. The man deserves a retirement.
