Ratings For Last Night's The Ultimate Fighter Featuring Kimbo Slice VS. Roy Nelson
Posted by Jeffrey Harris on 10.01.2009

Last night's Ultimate Fighter, which featured the anticipated first round bout between Roy Nelson and Kimbo Slice, drew 5.3 million viewers with a peak of 6.1 million viewers. The overall household rating for the show was 3.7. This broke the show's all time record of 4.1 million viewers/2.9 rating set by the 9/16 episode.

The 6.1 million viewers for the Kimbo Slice/Nelson is the highest viewership for any fight ever on SpikeTV, topping even the Dan Henderson/Quinton "Rampage" Jackson fight from UFC 75 which was broadcast on SpikeTV and drew 5.9 million viewers.

wow epic win !

Too bad everyone who tuned in saw a crappy match where a fat guy laid on top of another guy, peppering him with tiny strikes and doing just enough to win.

Kimbo = Ratings. Can you imagine if the fight didn't suck? All of these people might have actually come back.

Personally I enjoy UFC but am more of a casual fan. I went out of my way to watch this episode hoping to see something interesting. I was very dissappointed. It was slow, Kimbo was way too hesitent. He barely threw 10 punches the whole fight. A better match up for him might be better, but it is clear that he doesn't belong. I hate to say it, but it is true.

Everyone is talking trash now cause TUF got higher ratings then raw... for one night, and they needed an internet video sensation to do so. And i bet the casual fan like my self that watched that won't be back on a regular basis. I'm a casual fan, i'll get the occasional PPV. But i think Kimbo is so over rated, I went out of my way to watch this episode, and i was disapointed, Kimbo couldn't get out of that deadly 260lbs bear squash. I might watch it again, but never will it be at the top of my list. No i'm no a WWE mark, so don't rip me for that, i'm just proving a point that Raw gets big ratings every week. TUF gets one week and you guys are already changing the night.

Roy fought his fight. Kimbo lost. End of story...sort of. Kimbo, through his patience, humility, and willingness to learn, made me a fan. He's too old to be a serious threat, but he's much more...cool than I ever thought of him before.

this further proves that the average fans of mma are more prowrestling than boxing. cause it shows an extreme case of the gimmick selling a lot more than the skill.

and it seems like dana white, being the businessman he is, is starting to embrace it... even though he won't openly admit it. for example, how else can you explain vitor belfort, a relatively big name being given a title shot over a bunch of more qualified essentially no names?

TUF is a crappy reality show taped months in advance. RAW is a wrestling show live every week. TUF isn't meant to compete with RAW, but it beat it anyway, and if they want they could move it to Mondays to compete with RAW and just make a few stylistic changes.

Or they could simply put another show, part recap and maybe one live fight, and it'd also kill RAW every week. But UFC is mainly in the PPV business, and that's where it mauls WWE. If a UFC PPV ran at the same time as a WWE PPV, the WWE PPV would be crippled in terms of buys. Fortunately for WWE this doesn't really happen, and UFC PPVs are on Saturday nights anyway. WWE had a huge PPV scheduled to run up right against NFL football, and then switched it once they realized it. There is no way they'd intentionally schedule against the UFC because they know what would happen.

The problem with this season is that all these guys are crap, the question we have to ask is this; Can any of these guys beat Lesnar? The answer is obviously no, This show is at its best when you see guys who you can picture as champ or at least fighting high profile talent in big ppv matches.

Sadly, it was all by Kimbo's name alone as the fight itself totally blew. Nelson is going to get his fat ass kicked as soon as he fights someone with skill that won't just let him lay on top of him and "hammer" him with soft punches.

It's great it scored huge rating, but this might actually kill the show completely. The UFC had to pull out all the stops this season to keep the show alive by bringing in Kimbo and then bringing two coaches who are able to smack talk eachother. This was all to attract the casual fan which it did. Unfotunately the fight was terrible. The chances of those fans curious fans returning is minimal. This means the next season will probably see ratings closer to the last few seasons, and those were abysmal.

The point of the show is not necessarily to find THE GUY who will beat the champ, it's to find people to increase the talent pool. Griffin and Rashad looked horrible during the show and ended up turning into true contenders.

Not to take anything from Lesner cause he knows his skillset and sticks to it, but it's only gonna take one guy to figure him out and that'll be it. Period.

I admire the hell out of Kimbo and his beard because he knew he was coming in against guys who would all know how to take him. Too bad Rampage is a shitty coach, i'm a fan, but he's a shitty shitty coach/trainer. Kimbo needs to go to a straight up wrestling/Greco-roman camp. Dude gets taken down too easy and then just flops around like someone's little kid brother that everyone tortured.

Big Country was disappointing too. I've seen him fight better than that. Dare i say he ws scared to stand with kev?

Slice is the only reason to watch right now cause we've yet to see a decent fight given all the hype. Best part of the show is how much everyone wants to hate Kimbo, but can't cause he comes across as a normal dude.

Roy 'Big Fat Cunt-ry' Nelson is a GREAT advert for MMA isn't he?
A hillbilly redneck with the biggest beer belly i've ever seen on a so-called fighter.Oh yeah,he's a real athlete!Fat tw*t!

I think Kimbo is fine as a person. But definately needs helps in MMA. Last 2 fights(2 stoppages), not good. It seems like he is affraid to pull the trigger now on his punches. That is not good, especially for a brawler. It seems he knows he can't win in these types of fights(MMA). And that is not a knock on him personnally, he was just to late to the game. MMA fighers, would get killed in a boxing ring, Boxers would get killed in a wrestling match, wrestlers would get killed in a street fights(stand up brawl). And on and on and on... Different stokes, no shame

I think this is actually a very good point. Roy Nelson had a huge chance to put on a great fight by keeping it standing. Kind of like Bonnar-Forrest from TUF launched UFC, and so Bonnar always has a job. Nelson was in position to do that too, but instead he played the usual boring "as long as it's a win" fight strategy and got his win. Now all the MMA elitist nerds will talk him up and say if anybody wasn't excited, they aren't fans and don't know MMA.

Well, I know MMA, but I also know business, and I know that a successful business is made up of mostly casual fans who don't actually know the nuances and specifics of the sport they're watching, but are being entertained. Take the NFL for example. The "experts" are almost always idiots, and their analysis is almost always dumbed down. That's why a guy like Jaws is a bad announcer, whereas Madden was a good one. People don't want to see how to read a defense or exploit matchups or anything like that, they just want to see big plays and big hits. So the NFL delivers that. You don't get the coach's film during a broadcast, you get a TV audience broadcast instead, with announcers that purposely avoid the Xs and Os of football.

Combat sports, here MMA, are in the same boat. Actually even worse, because it's almost always nerds that have never been in a fight or don't have proven track records claiming what the proper theory is. MMA is still an evolving sport so you can't even have that track record anyway, the most you can have is a high level analysis ability from other sources, such as being a skilled attorney, but the people commentating don't hold those positions or respect them.

Sorry to be so long winded. But Nelson just screwed up, and UFC did miss the boat, and that's a huge reason why Dana was unhappy. A huge standup war there buoys the UFC into higher echelons of popularity. Instead, a fat ass that will be cut as soon as he loses bored every casual fan and most other fans to sleep, even forcing the ref into disgust. Fail.

Roy Nelson is abig tub of lard and should be made to lose that disgusting jelly belly before the UFC signs him to any contract.

Kimbo may be a big draw but they gonna have to be careful who they match him with when they give him a couple of UFN paydays any top 15 HW would destroy him (so would alot of LHW guys).
