Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Cain Velasquez Will Crown A #1 Contender
Posted by Larry Csonka on 11.10.2009

Earlier today it was announced that Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (32-5-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) and undefeated contender Cain Velasquez (7-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) will serve as the main event for UFC 108. Dana White confirmed today that the bout will serve to crown a #1 contender. Here is what Dana White had to say…

"Nogueira vs. Velasquez is a great matchup between the present and the future of the heavyweight division. Nogueira showed in the (Randy) Couture fight that he still has plenty left to offer at the top level of the game, and Velasquez was devastating in his win over Ben Rothwell, so with both guys in top form, we're definitely going to see a No. 1 contender emerge from this fight to take on the winner of the Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin title fight."

UFC 108 takes place on January 2nd from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Here is the updated card:

- Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Cain Velasquez
- Rashad Evans vs. Thiago Silva
- Junior Dos Santos vs. Gabriel Gonzaga*
- Carlos Condit vs. Paul Daley*
- Tyson Griffin vs. Jim Miller*
- Martin Kampmann vs. Rory Markham*
- Joe Lauzon vs. Sam Stout*
- Dan Lauzon vs. Cole Miller*
- Ryan Jensen vs. Mark Munoz*
- Jake Ellenberger vs. Mike Pyle*

* - Not officially announced

What do you think the betting line will be? I'm thinking Nog -160, Cain +140?

The difference between Hendo/Bisping and Nogueria/Velasquez is that Big Nog is still a tremendous threat to anyone in the HW division and Cain is still new to the upper echelons. Dana was banking on Bisping beating Hendo b/c he knew Anderson would try to avoid a rematch with Hendo.

So basically, Brock won't hide from either of them.

Otherwise, as I've said- it's sad to see what's usually the biggest PPV of the year to look like this. Injuries being what they are, it's not like there's much the UFC can do about it, but I know I won't be spending money on this... got to love sports bars.

This is great and perfectly logical. As a side note it still amazes me that the internet crowd still honestly believes that Silva is afraid to face Hendo again. I know I'm terrified of guys that I've choked out and whose standup consists of winging a big right every 5 seconds.
