i wouldn't say affliction because everyone saw it going downhill once u saw how much they paid their fighters compared to how much money they were bringing in....
i'd have to say either brocks illness or fedor signs with strikeforce over ufc

"""Josh Barnett's Positive Steroid Test
Fedor Emelianenko Signs With Strikeforce Instead Of The UFC
The Death Of Affliction"""
You know, all three of these should pretty much be all lumped into one.
And being as it ALL started with Steroi Boy failing yet another drug test, and everything else was just fall out, I'd have to pick Barnett's failure as the number one story of the because of the impact it created in the entire landscape of MMA and the fallout that ensued.
There really was no bigger story than Barnett failing the test, then Affliction closing, and then Fedor's immediate contract negotiations with opposing companies.
And it all started with Joshy, so he's my number one.

Sam nailed it... and Josh's failed test should easily win for the reasons he mentioned.

Fedor snubs UFC

cyborg beating the sexiest female MMA fighters ever THE Gina Carano to win the strikeforce 145 womens belt would be one of the biggest stories also

I would say probably Fedor not signing with the UFC was the biggest story.
I think the Machida - Shogun decision deserves a mention as I believe it really highlighted poor decision making for MMA fights.

I'd have to go with H1N1

Brock's illness.

Fedor not signing with UFC was not a story. He was never signing with UFC. No matter what was offered he was always going to find some thing to ask for to make sure UFC wouldn't do it. For some reason the best fighter of all time has lost a bit of his nerve and has no interest in finding the best competition.
The biggest story unfortunately will be Brock's illness. He may never fight again.

When you start the year thinking it's a virtual lock Brock and Fedor are going to get it on at some point, and then end the year with one guy potentially done and the other guy in a rival promotion- well, there's your biggest story of the year.

Virtual lock? When Brock wasn't yet the unified Champ and Fedor still had multiple fights left in his contract- at another rival promotion..
It didn't seem like a remote possibility until the summer when Josh failed, Affliction folded, and Fedor became a free agent (again).

I would say either Fedor to Strikeforce or the UFC 100 buyrates. At least if you look at impact on the general media those two are by and away the biggest stories. GSP/Penn was probably the most hyped fight/biggest meeting between 2 great athletes.

Lesnars illness, no doubt. He came so far so fast in the world of MMA and to see the heavyweight champion to go out in this fashion was a major surprise. I never would have guessed that this would be what could stop the beasts reign as champ. All of the trash talk between him and Carwin and to see it cancelled shocked the hell out of me.
