411 MMA Feedback: Is Randy Couture A Legit Light Heavyweight Contender?

Randy Couture defeated Mark Coleman at UFC 109, and Dana White has stated that Couture is in the mix for the LHW Title. Is this a reality, or more a case of respect for Randy's reputation?

NO.

Marc Coleman would have lost to a washing machine last night. His win against Vera (legit or not, and i believe it was) was unimpressive. He would struggle mightily against the likes of Machida, shogun, Rampage and others

2 legit 2 quit

I would say just based on his record you have to consider him a contender. Not his win-loss record, but his record in winning when nobody thinks he can (Sylvia, Gonzaga, Lidell fight one etc). He may not be a contender in the true sense, but if you put him in there with the champion more than a fair share of people will pick him to win just because he's Randy Couture.

not until he goes a fight without being hurt from a strike, and at this point in his career i dont see that happening.

No, not at all.

I see him being A contender at A Senior citizen bingo.

Give him the loser of Machida/Rua or Rampage/Evans and then we'll talk. He'll probably get the title shot if he wins whatever fight he gets next just because the PPV will be money, not that that's a bad thing.

No, he'll probably get gifted a title shot because Dana knows it'll sell but he's not a legit title contender anymore, he could probably beat guys like Bonner & Jardine but he'd get smashed by anyone in the top 5 LHW rankings.

Posted By: UK_MMA_Fan (Guest)  on February 08, 2010 at 02:35 AM

No, but a fight between him and Machida/Shogun would draw, so he'll get a shot.

Posted By: Vordeo (Guest)  on February 08, 2010 at 03:25 AM

I think he's one fight away from a title shot.

Does he really want to sit on the shelf until October or something when Machida/Shogun would be ready to defend the title? He's not getting any younger, and though his performance is astounding for an old man, even his skill can't outrun time forever.

Yes

Is he the second best fighter in the division.....ofcourse not. However he is the toughest matchup for Machida. Randy may very well be able to catch the counter puncher and throw him up against the cage and work him over for 30 minutes.

Are you talking about that questionable (see - Rabbid) punch to the back of the ear that he took in his match vs. Lesnar?

If so, how would you like a "Ham-hock" to the back of your ear?

But MMA, EVERYONE gets a good shot in every once in a while. So, what you're saying is true, EVERYONE should have Ali/Jones Jr. quickness (which is a misnomer b/c ALL fighters in MMA DON'T have that kind of stand-up skillset).

But on the Couture thing, give him 2 more fights against #'s 2-3 on the Lgt Hvy UFC Rankings, have him face either Silva or Rua.

If not that, then have him go up against either Griffin or Evans. When, and only when, he beats anyone of these four (Or perhaps Rampage or Henderson), will we talk about him being in contention.

As of now, he was never really in the picture, and his win against a WAY over the hill Coleman does ZERO for making that argument.

Correction: Henderson isn't in the UFC anymore, my mistake. But I'll still say if he gets past one of the Top-5 contenders, then we should have this talk.

He needs to beat the loser of Rua/Machida, Rashad/Rampage, or the winner of Lil Nog/Forrest. He wins one fo those matches, and yeah, I'd have to consider him A contender. Win two, and I say hes THE contender.

I respect the hell out of Randy Couture, but considering him a title contender at 205 is an insult to about a half a dozen other guys in that division.

Cundogmillionaire-YOU GIMP!
That saying wasn't even cool 20 years ago and certainly isn't now,you clown.

NOOOOOOOOO

Couture just belongs in odd fights now...let him fight anderson the spider then we'll see if he is worthy

NOPE!... A man who’s on a 2 fight win streak (an Unmotivated B. Vera & Old M. Coleman), considering who the champion has defeated to have that title (T.Silva, Evans, Shogun… All in their Prime!) It’s a little far fetched… To be already talking about this… I say he's two fight's away!...

i'll tell you this...machida vs. couture is the best match possible

the reasons why are because couture's strengths are the exact opposite of machida's (wrestling, clinch, boxing). also, it is mr. undefeated vs. mr. upset (he's already won the title 5 times when he wasn't supposed to)

i think he definitely has a chance

At least one more fight away, and it'd have to be a big time fight. As has been stated, he's coming off two heavyweight losses, an unimpressive win over a nobody at LHW, and a win over a guy that is 1-1 since his return in his mid-forties.
I have more than a handful of guys ranked above Randy at LHW.

Poeple are just looking at his age. He definately is a contender and his loss to Noguiera was a fought at a fast pace. Meaning it was a great match agaisnt a possible World Champ. No he is not getting any younger but i pick Couture over the great Machida if they were to fight this year. machida might come in too overconfident and he has never been in there with a GREAT wrestle like Couture!

Posted By: jmedin01 (Guest)  on February 08, 2010 at 02:31 PM

you have to remember one VERY important thing

couture is not a top 5 LHW fighter right now, but he is hands-down the number 1 all-time fighter in the division. no one in that division has accomplished more in their lifetime. also, NO OTHER FIGHTER had proven that they could rise to the challenge and win the belt when all odds are against them

i say, let him win one more fight and then give him one last shot at the title. with all he's done in his career, you can't say he doesn't deserve it

could dana white shove his head any further up randy's ass? why not have randy fight hulk hogan on the next ppv? at least wrestling is up front about being fixed. randy is a legend, but his days as a contender are over. white gives his favs (brock are you ok? thats all right you done need to defend the title thie year.....) too much leeway. lets promote some fights, not just sell tickets

he'll always bring it to whoever he faces but i don't seem him standing a real chance against any of the top guys outside of maybe rashad. his takedown defense would be too much for rashad and if he could use the clinch to neutralize rashad's strikes he could beat him by standing lay and pray.

hey the man has proven that he is. what he lacks physically he makes up for in tactics.
