Gray Maynard Wants Name Opponents
Posted by Larry Csonka on 03.15.2010

- Gray Maynard recently spoke with MMA Junkie, here are the highlights…

On His Status: "That's just where I'm at,. The last three or four (fights) I've had tough ones, but they're just not that name. It's like, 'Ah well, he beat Nate (Diaz), but he was supposed to. He beat (Rich) Clementi, but he was supposed to.'"

On Fighting The Winner Of Florian vs. Gomi: "If Florian beats him, [Florian has] a great name," Maynard said. "It's like, 'Florian's unbelievable, he beat the PRIDE champ'. ... It doesn't matter if [Gomi] is still good or not; it's his name (that matters)."

On Fighting Sean Sherk: "But [Sherk] has a name because he was a champ. I was trying to (get the fight), but he said no. And I was like, 'Well, I'll keep that quiet, I guess. He's got a job, and he's doing what he has to do, but I would have liked to have that fight.'"

On George Sotiropoulos: "Yeah, George is a tough fight, but how much is he going to do for my career?" Maynard asked. "I'll take it if I have to, but if I have a chance for Florian or a name, then I'm going to jump on that."

On Florian vs. Gomi: "I think Florian will win," Maynard said. "I don't know if Gomi's really into it anymore. The last two or three (fights), he's looked like he hasn't really trained. It's just like, 'Ah, I'm here for the paycheck.' But obviously he's tough, and he's a good name."

If Gray wants bigger fights and names, he has to put an end to that decision streak he's got going.

Sure, wins are wins... but history has shown that being entertaining means just as much (if not more).

Being entertaining can also get you cut.

Wins, usually don't put your job at risk.

Fuck Gray Maynard. He barely beat Nate Diaz. I gave Nate that fight. Wasn't anything impressive against Huerta. Does he think he is more of a name than Diaz. As an aussie I pray that he fights Georgy and that he gets dominated by a "no name" fighter. The little bitch.

I think it is a little early for him to get this cocky. Someone is going to have to humble him now. I hope it's George!

I don't blame Gray for being a little salty. He's watching a guy he beat handidly fight for the LW Title in Abu Dhabi while he's at home with his thumb up his ass.

...and since Frankie's loss to Gray, he's won 2 FotNs and a decisive win over the former champ - while Gray has attempted to blanket his opponents, has one 6 of his 7 UFC wins via decision, and his last 2 were split decisions that many felt shouldn't have gone to him.

Gray might have the win over Frankie, but even with the loss on it, Frankie's record is better then Maynard's. His wins are over higher quality fighters and none are split decisions.

Serial, being entertaining gets you cut? Tell that to Wanderlei Silva, Tito, Clay Guida, and the other exciting guys who would have been cut by now if they'd been boring.

Dana rewards exciting fighters, and cuts people who fight boring after less defeats. Don't believe me? Ask Houston Alexander, Kalib Starnes and Thales Leites, Keith Jardine, Stephan Bonner and Forrest Griffin.

Did it shock you that Dan Hardy got the nod for the WW title shot? Or that Bisping got onto the TUF series against a far, far bigger name in Hendo? Or that Dana loves Paul Daley? Is best friends with Wandy?

There are two ways to succeed in UFC. Be hyper exciting, and who cares what your record is as long as it ain't too bad, but if you're boring, you better win all your fights.
