James Toney vs. Randy Couture Will Be a Catchweight Fight; Toney Comments
Posted by Chris Lansdell on 07.03.2010

UFC officials confirmed today that the Randy COuture-James Toney fight at UFC 118 will be a catchweight fight, though the actual weight has yet to be determined. At a recent media event to promote UFC 118, Toney spoke about the fight with Couture and his training regime. Some highlights:

On the decision to make the fight catchweight: "They want to make it easy for Randy. They're trying to please him. Whatever they want to do, we can do it."

On his training: "I'm going to be in the best shape I've been in since I fought (Evander) Holyfield because of the MMA training. I give MMA training the utmost respect. I train hard. It's hard work. It was hard for me at first, but I love it. I really don't want to be here right now. I'd rather be home training. Tomorrow's the Fourth of July, and I'm leaving early in the morning. Tomorrow afternoon, I'll be in the gym."

On why he chose to fight at heavyweight: "I could fight at 205, but why should I? Me not being effective against Brock Lesnar, that's crazy. I fought Sam Peter. Sam Peter is bigger than he is. I fought Hasim Rahman. He's bigger than him. I fought John Ruiz. He's bigger than him. Everybody I fought the last eight or nine years is bigger than me. They outweighed me, and I never had a problem with it."

On his approach to Couture's style: "I haven't adjusted. I'm going to do me. This is boxing versus MMA. You're going to see how James Toney boxes. You're going to see why James Toney hits hard. You're going to see why James Toney hardly ever gets hit. As far as takedowns go, I welcome them. If he tries to take me down, it's going to be a short night for him – a very short night. Matter of fact, I've got a pillow for him."

On his prediction for the fight: "Pay your $49.95. Come Aug. 28, you're going to see something different. It's going to be unbelievable. Don't worry about me. Worry about Randy. If you see me fighting a bear, don't worry about me. Protect the bear."

Toney = Buyrate. And he better also equal takedown defense if he wants to stand a chance against Randy

couldnt agree more... fighting standing is one thing, but wrestling someone is 100% different

Sam Peter, Hasim Rahman, and John Ruiz are actually not bigger than Brock Lesnar. What an idiot.

While Toney is way too cocky and confident, it honestly wouldn't shock me if he knocked out Randy.. Plenty of guys are pure strikers with horrible wrestling (I.e most fighters from England).. Many of the BEST fighters are elite wrestlers, but the most DANGEROUS will always be a guy capable of ending a fight with one punch..

This guy could not be fn dumber. Not one of the guys he mentioned is bigger than Lesnar. Im going to the fight and i cant wait to see Couture embarass this douche.

And people think Lesnar is an MMA heel? He's about to be topped in grand fashion. Only problem is that Toney is going to get destroyed and laughed at immediately.

Is there any chance at all that he's playing dumb, trying to lull Couture and others into a false sense of security? He can't be THIS dumb, can he? How could he truly have no understanding of the concept of a 265lb Lesnar jumping on top of him and beating the shit out of him? What part of his boxing experience has taught him how to get out of that situation?

From his comments, it sounds like his takedown defense is trying to hit the guy with an uppercut when he shoots in for a double leg or single leg takedown. That's not as easy as it sounds or you'd see it happen a lot in MMA.

Only worry for Randy is his chin. If he can avoid the early big strikes then it'll be Couture/Gabe Gonzaga all over again.

Toney gets into a boxing stance, Couture double-legs him into the fifth row and pummels him into a hamburger.

yeah you fought bigger guys who never wrestled before honestly if coture wasnt so damn old with a glass chin now he would win, brock or anyone else would just take him down and when it but coture is alll dboxing which he cant do if he cant get it down on the ground itl be a short night for coture

Listen guys i Hear ya about the match if couture is able to get him on the ground.big if beacuse as we just seen with brock few weeks ago its not as easy as it seems when i got is dropping bomb on your face...an as a fan of both fights i see tony beating couture beacese i dont see him being able to just throw tony to the ground with out taking one or two to the head and light out, then hopefully randy calls it quits please for yours and chuck live

It would be nice to see couture pull a maurice smith on toney and chop him down with kicks. Yes it does keep him standing with toney but it just might take some of the power out of toneys punches and give him a better opportunity for shooting in a little safer. Just trying to think outside the box.
