Mir vs. Velasquez, Griffin vs. Ortiz III in The Works
Posted by Larry Csonka on 02.10.2012

- Lorenzo Fertitta keeps announcing fights. First Fertitta announced that former UFC heavyweight champions Frank Mir (16-5 MMA, 14-5 UFC) and Cain Velasquez (9-1 MMA, 7-1 UFC) are on a collision course. Mir has won three in a row and is working for a title shot, while Velasquez is looking to rebound from his title loss in November to new Champion, Junior Dos Santos.

Fertitta also stated that a third bout between former light heavyweight champs Forrest Griffin and Tito Ortiz is likely. Ortiz won the first meeting via split decision at UFC 59, and Griffin won the second one (also via split decision) at UFC 106.

No dates for the possible bouts were announced.

I hope Mir's improved enough to take the fight to Cain... but I just can't imagine him doing well against him. Then again, nobody though Nog could be made to tap. Of course Nog is far from his prime...

...Brock died......?

You're the asshole!!

Cain has like the weakest chin in the heavyweight division in my book. kongo would touch him and he would just fall down and ids exposed him and cain aint going to be able to dominate mir on the ground so mir via submission in the first.

And Griffin via decision

i think cain/mir will be a really good match.. i hate mir but i'll admit hes gotten alot better since the last brock fight.. his offensive striking is really good but his defense striking sucks balls.. if cain can pressure him hes good to go.

can care less for tito/griffin III .. but i hope griffin wins

mir has a pretty weak chin also.. i dont remember ever seeing him take a shot and being able to survive.. but its hard to say that really b/c all the big guys hit him all the time.. brock/carwin.. big nog had him rocked and would of prob finished him if he didnt stop punching and had gone for that choke...

you can say cain has a weak chin but really.. he got knocked down 3 times by kongo .. u can contribute that to his lack of striking back then.. not his chin.. and he recovered from all of them really.. and its freaking KONGO.. so nothing wrong there really.. then he got rocked by JDS... aside from roy nelson who has ever taken a clean shot from JDS and survived.

I was hoping to see Werdum vs Mir...but I will enjoy this one too. Does anybody really want to see O vs G 3?

How can anyone say Cain's got a weak chin? Like wylun said, he survived getting dropped by Kongo 3 times. Not many people can get hit by him once & survive, just ask Pat Barry about that.
Yeah, he got caught early by JDS, 18-0 Brazilian kickboxing HW champion & 10 KO's in his 14 MMA wins. If anything it's a testament to Junior's striking than a condemnation of Cain's chin.

Anyways, Mir's standup has always been ridiculously overrated. The only guys hes ever KO'd are a past their primes Big Nog & Cro Cop & a never-was in Wes Sims plus he always fades when someone tags his chin cleanly. His only chance is a tapout but if a guy with Brocks wrestling credentials couldn't keep Cain on his back then I don't see how Mir can out-wrestle him.

I don't see how Mir can realistically win this fight, Cain by 1st round TKO.

Considering it's the heavyweight division it's hard to tell who has a weak chin because they are getting hit by 230 pound guys. Though I think the list of best chins in the heavyweight division goes:
1. Roy Nelson
.......Everyone else.

Damn I think Mir is going to get knocked out. What a great fight announcement though. I'm a (was) a huge Brock Lesnar fan but I laughed at the "Brock died" comment.

I will laugh so much imagining you choking on those words after Mir snaps on a kneebar!

Oldskooler-
They call it jiu jitsu, Mir doesn't have to out wrestle Cain. Mir has struggled with the bigger guys in the division however in this matchup I say he has more than a chance at winning.

mir has a better all around game explosiveness to cain all day but i believe mir is better everywhere except wrestling of course

Posted By: Guest#0207 (Guest)  on February 10, 2012 at 07:28 PM

at the end of the day (or very short first round) JDS did not hit cain's chin to knock him down, it was back of the ear - which makes it easy to get rocked when hit there. If you add JDS hitting you there, then it's bye bye (unless you are roy nelson or liddell pre rampage breaking the iron jaw). As for Mir, I think he is a great fighter, and as correctly said, he would have been beaten had Nog not gone for the choke. Mir's ability to take a punch isn't great, but he can fight rocked and recover well enough to beat fighters if they give him room. I just don't see cain backing off when he drops Mir.

Hey Frank, I'm very well aware of what BJJ is and that Mir is very good at it but he has to get the fight to the ground before he submit Cain.

Mir's ability to get the fight to the ground is piss poor, most of his best submissions have come from him being on his back, Cain's wrestling and ability to get back to his feet are good. Unless you think Mir can land a flying triangle or Cain decides to take him down & try to play top contol (worst gameplan he could use) this fight doesn't hit the ground.

I like this fight FMir vs.CVelasquez. Its a fresh match up. I wouldnt say either has a weak chin since any HW fight is one shot away to a KO. CVelasquez put down BLesnar but then got put down himself by JDS. FMir put down Big'Nog then got pounded on by BLesnar so its anybody's guess how it will go. TOrtiz vs.FGriffin, not so much but as long as its not a main or co-main event. Should be the fight before the co-main event so the expectations arent high.

I was hoping the UFC would book Forrest Griffin vs Anderson Silva 2. Maybe we'll get that rematch someday...

Posted By: TimE (Guest)  on February 11, 2012 at 04:50 PM

I love people are saying that Velasquez has a weak chin when he was finished once. Sure he's been rocked in some fights, but everyone has. I think he gives Mir a hard time if he can keep some distance between them early on and let Mir tire out.

Griffen will KO Ortiz. Tito has shown a bad weakness to body attacks lately and has terrible striking defense. His only hope is to get Forrest down early and hurt him.

Even though he "retired" Brock has the weakest chin. When hit, he always folds like a cheap suit. Against Carwin, Velazquez, Overeem all he did was go down and cover up.

Posted By: Benny (Guest)  on February 12, 2012 at 12:29 AM

Mir v Velasquez is an interesting match up. I'd love to see Mir win but I can't see it happening. Mir v Werdum has to happen next.
