Thiago Silva Fails UFC on Fuel TV 6 Drug Test, Fighter Suspended
Posted by Jeffrey Harris on 11.21.2012

UFC has released a statement regarding light heavyewight fighter Thiago Silva (14-3, MMA; 5-3, 2NC, UFC) who failed a drug test for marijuna following his fight with Stanislav Nedkov at UFC on Fuel TV 6: Franklin vs. Le. His win over Nedkov has also been overturned to a no contest.

According to the UFC, Silva admitted he used a banned substance and has agreed to take a drug-rehab program similar to Dave Herman who failed a drug test following his fight with Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 154 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Silva will be suspended for six months retroactive from the event on November 10. He must now also pass a drug test upon completetion of the suspension before he receives clearance to fight again.

This is the second time Silva has had a win overturned due to a failed drug test. He previously had a decision win over Brandon Vera at UFC 125 overturned to a no contest for submitting a falsified urine sample since he was taking steroids.

Here is the official UFC statement:
"Thiago Silva tested positive for marijuana metabolites following his bout at UFC on FUEL TV in Macau. The UFC organization has a strict, consistent policy against the use of any illegal and/or performance-enhancing drugs, stimulants or masking agents. Silva has admitted to taking the banned substance and has agreed to participate in an approved drug-rehabilitation program and serve a six-month suspension retroactive to the November 10 event. He must pass a drug test upon completion of the suspension before receiving clearance to fight again."
