Raphael Assuncao Suffers Broken Arm After Winning At UFC on FOX 5
Posted by Joseph Lee on 12.12.2012

MMA Junkie reports that Raphael Assuncao (19-4 MMA, 3-1 UFC) appeared to be headed to a bantamweight title shot in the UFC after three wins in a row (including one over top contender Mike Easton (13-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC)), but he has suffered a broken arm at UFC on FOX 5 when he defeated Easton by unanimous decision (with scores of 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27) at the KeyArena in Seattle in the FX-televised preliminary card. Assuncao is now 3-3 in his first six WEC and UFC fights, with other wins over Johnny Eduardo and Issei Tamura.

He thought the break happened in the first round, but realized it happened at the beginning of the second after a rewatch. While he threw a spinning back kick, his arm also rotated and broke when it hit Easton. He thought he strained a ligament or nerve and kept on fighting.

Here are highlights:

On the nature of his injury: "It is the ulna, which is the smaller bone on the forearm, and it's not a very good feeling with the fracture. It's been handled, but as far as the pain goes, it's OK right now. The only thing is I might need to have a surgical procedure to keep that bone in place."

On how his arm broke: "It wasn't flexed all the way, so when I hit him with the forearm, the bone wasn't protected by the muscle.

On having surgery: "You have to open it up, the cut has to heal, then your body has to absorb the plate and stuff. (It'll be) at least three months before I can punch the bag again."

On his future: "I'm happy [to be in the title picture]. I feel it's coming. I keep doing the right thing. Now I have a little longer of a healing process coming up. But yeah, it was a great experience. I was talking to my brother, and experience is nothing anyone can take from you. Even if it's a long healing process, no one can take the experience away from you."
