Jeremy Stephens To Drop To Featherweight Division In Early 2013
Posted by Joseph Lee on 12.20.2012

MMA Junkie reports that lightweight Jeremy Stephens (20-9 MMA, 7-8 UFC) is planning to drop to featherweight early next year.

He announced his plans on Twitter, and it was confirmed with his manager Ryan Hess. The plan is for Stephen to have a test cut to 145 in January after helping Myles Jury prepare for his fight at UFC 155 against Michael Johnson.

Hass said: "It shouldn't be a problem and (we're) looking for a fight by March. His last couple fights have been on short notice, so he's looking to get a full camp with a nutritionist and tweak his training to bring up his speed, but not lose any muscle or power. He'll be a contender at 145 quick. He likes 155 and it was never his idea to drop, but after consideration, he's pumped about it."

Stephens recently lost his third fight in a row when he was knocked out 1:55 into the first round at UFC on FOX 5. Before that, he lost to Anthony Pettis at UFC 137 (split decision) and Donald Cerrone at UFC on FUEL TV 3 (unanimous decision). The last time he won was a unanimous decision win against Danny Downes at the TUF 13 Finale in June 2011. Before that, he had a "Knockout of the Night" win over Marcus Davis at UFC 125. That was his fourth career bonus win and third for best knockout.

Stephens is the latest to drop from lightweight to featherweight after Frankie Edgar, Dennis Siver, Ross Pearson, Kenny Florian and Darren Elkins.
