Eduardo Dantas To Defend Bantamweight Title At Bellator 89
Posted by Joseph Lee on 12.20.2012

MMA Junkie reports that Eduardo Dantas (14-3 MMA, 4-0 BFC) will defend his bantamweight title against tournament winner, top contender and former teammate Marcos Galvao (13-5-1 MMA, 4-2 BFC) at Bellator 89. The event takes place on February 14 at the Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Bellator will also begin its season eight middleweight tournament at the event, although no participants have been named yet. This will be the fifth event of 12 for the eighth season, the first season to air on Spike TV after several seasons on MTV2. The first event to air on Spike will be Bellator 85 on January 17. The main card will air live on Spike at 10 PM ET. This moves the show from Fridays to Thursdays, getting a lead-in from TNA Impact Wrestling. Preliminary cards will continue to air live on Spike.com at 8 PM ET.

Dantas won the title by making Zach Makovsky submit to an arm-triangle choke in April. He won the season five bantamweight tournament to get a shot after a stoppage win over Wilson Reis and decision wins over Ed west and Alexis Vila. He is undefeated in Bellator and won seven of his last eight fights. His last fight was at Shooto Brazil (with the permission of Bellator since it would not air on US TV), where he was knocked out by Tyson Nam in the first round. It didn't hurt Dantas, but it did get Nam some popularity as he will debut for World Series of Fighting in early 2013.

Nam was set to fight Galvao at Bellator 79, but had to drop out and Galvao's title fight with Dantas was moved to season 8.

The two could have met in the season 5 bantamweight tournament. Galvao defeated Chase Beebe but lost to Vila in the semifinals. Vila then lost to Dantas. Galvao ended up winning the season six tournament with decision wins against West and Travis Marx and a second round RKO over Luis Noguiera.

Bellator has four other fights scheduled for the start of season 8. The featherweight and lightweight titles will be defended at Bellator 85, the welterweight at Bellator 86 and the vacant middleweight title will be awarded at Bellator 88. The only title fight not announced for season 8 is heavyweight, which was just defended this past Friday when Alexander Volkov defeated Richard Hale, and light heavyweight. The light heavyweight title fight between Christian M'Pumbu and Attila Vegh was moved to season 8 after being originally set for last Friday. It could be on Bellator 87 on January 31.
