Dana White Comments On Gay Stigma In Sports
Posted by Joseph Lee on 12.27.2012

MMA Junkie reports that Dana White says that Liz Carmouche (7-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) could open doors for gay athletes as she is the UFC's first openly gay fighter. She will face UFC women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey (6-0 MMA, 0-0 UFC) at UFC 157 in February.

White appeared on Showtime's Jim Rome: Live to talk about the subject with Rome, Michael Irvin and James Carville. The three agreed there wasn't a stigma like there was a few years ago, but it was still there.

White said: "I love it. I think what it's going to take is it's going to take some brave people. If you are gay, you're going to have to be brave, and you're going to have to come out say it. But people are very worried about it. Not just athletes, but actors and actresses in Hollywood, they're nervous about what's going to happen to them and their careers if they come out and say they are."

White has been vocal in his support of the LGBT community. This is even after a 2009 video in which White used gay slurs after a report from Sherdog's Loretta Hunt about managers losing backstage access. He also made misogynist comments at Hunt. He later apologized after complaints from GLAAD.

The UFC has support gay causes, including the building of the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Southern Nevada. White considers openly gay fighters and gay marriage to be non issues and thinks that with more fighters like Carmouche, more athletes will feel the same way.

He added: "I [couldn't] care less. It's 2013. I still think it's ridiculous that the government can tell two people who love each other they can't get married. Liz is. I'm happy to have her. She's out first openly gay fighter, and I hope more [come out]."
