Donald Cerrone Thinks Jon Jones Should Have Fought Chael Sonnen On Short Notice
Posted by Joseph Lee on 01.02.2013

In a question-and-answer session with fans before the weigh-ins at UFC 155 in Las Vegas (via MMA Junkie), Donald Cerrone says that he thinks Jon Jones (17-1 MMA, 11-1 UFC) should have accepted a short notice fight with Chael Sonnen (27-12-1 MMA, 6-5 UFC) at UFC 151, which was eventually canceled in September. Cerrone and Jones are teammates at the Jackson-Winklejohn camp in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

He said: "Yes, I'd have fought. They could call me tomorrow and ask me to fight. I think you need to fight. That's our job. I don't think you should curl up and find a way out. So yes, that's my answer."

Dan Henderson (29-8 MMA, 6-2 UFC) was Jones' original opponent for the event but he was sidelined with a knee injury. UFC canceled UFC 151 altogether and then booked Jones for UFC 152 in Toronto against Lyoto Machida. Machida said no, so Vitor Belfort moved up from middleweight. He eventually lost to Jones via fourth-round submission.

Now the fight between Jones and Sonnen will happen after the seventeenth season of The Ultimate Fighter. The taping for the season has finished and it will debut on January 22 on FX.

Cerrone says he's talked with Jones about this before. He added: "He's my teammate, and we have this discussion all the time. I said, 'You should've done it.' And he goes, 'Well, you don't make a million (dollars) to fight.' And I said, 'Well, you're right, but I f---ing fight every time with all my heart.'"

Cerrone (19-4 MMA, 6-1 UFC) will face Anthony Pettis (15-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) at UFC on FOX 6 later this month in Chicago. The winner will likely get a shot at the lightweight champion, Benson Henderson.
