Over 100 Fighters Show Up To UFC Scouting Session In Mexico City
Posted by Joseph Lee on 01.08.2013

MMA Junkie reports that the UFC held an informal scouting session in Mexico City today that drew 115 fighters. It could provide the company with contestants for The Ultimate Fighter: Mexico.

While UFC has announced a date for that show, President Dana White said that talks with broadcast partners are ongoing. Mexico is one of the few major international markets the UFC hasn't hit. A return to Puerto Rico, where the company held an event in 1996 under previous owners, is set for 2014. The session brought in mostly Mexican fighters, but there were some from Central and South America.

Cain Velasquez was in the area to talk about his UFC 155 title win over Junior Dos Santos, after he lost the belt to Dos Santos at UFC on FOX 1 thirteen months before. He is considered an integral part of building the Mexican and Latin American market for the UFC. Other names include bantamweight Erik "Goyito" Perez. Perez wears a luchador mask at weigh-ins and did so on his most recent walk to the cage. He has a three-fight win streak and hopes to one day compete in his home country.

He said: "I want to represent the country, and I want to represent all of Latin America and all of the Spanish-speaking guys. I feel like I'm carrying a lot of weight on my back every time I go to the octagon, and I need to show what I'm doing as a Mexican."
