Brazil Establishes New MMA Regulatory Commission, Joins IMMAF
Posted by Jeffrey Harris on 01.17.2013

The International Mixed Martial Arts Federation announced today in an official press release that the country of Brazil has now established their own regulatory athletic commission with the Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission. or Comissão Atlética Brasileira de MMA (CABMMA). CABMMA has now become a member of the IMMAF group.

The board members of CABMMA will be made up by Giovanni Biscardi and Mr. Rafael Favetti. Biscardi is a lawyer and a BJJ black belt. Favetti, also a lawyer, has served as the Executive Secretary of the Minister of Justice and Interim Minister of Justice. Both men spearheaded the formation of the new federation which will be represented in Rio de Janeiro, Distrito Federal and Paraná. The federation soon plans on expanding to federations in São Paulo, Bahia and Amazonas who will also be formalized. This will provide a base for the CABMMA in six states that comprise the most active MMA markets in Brazil.

IMMAF President August Wallen stated in the release: "This membership is a step forward for MMA everywhere as the world of martial arts turns to Brazil for inspiration. Brazil has had and continues to have a great impact on the development of MMA, and for the sport to be properly organized on a national level means great progress. The IMMAF has devoted much time into finding the right solution for the representation of this great MMA community, and I am happy to welcome the CABMMA as a member."

The CABMMA is currently up and running and the first MMA event they will officially supervise is UFC on FX 7 which takes place on January 19 at the Ibirapuera Arena in Sao Paulo.

Biscardi stated on the announcement: "The purpose of the CABMMA is to assure an adequate environment for the practice and teaching of MMA in Brazil, with focus on the ethical conduct of the parties involved and the total safety of the practitioner. There are many involved with MMA in Brazil and we aim to be the focal point of the sport that they can turn to. We look forward to reaching out to the key players of the MMA community, and we invite all actors, commercial and non-profit, to join up and support the formation of this federation."

Erika Mattson, Director of Communications for the IMMAF stated: "Brazil is a sizeable country that is fairly fragmented when it comes to MMA, and no existing organization has had a formal, nation-wide position to work from. The CABMMA is a fresh start that we believe is needed for MMA to grow and for all parties to come together, a key requirement of IMMAF membership. We also have complete faith in the board to represent MMA with the Brazilian government and further the position of MMA among Brazilian sports, ensuring a strong platform for MMA in all of South America."

The IMMAF and the CABMMA expect to hold a National Summit for the development of MMA in Brazil in Rio de Janeiro in the spring.
