UFC Planning Asian Expansion Through Fighter Development Program In Indonesia
Posted by Joseph Lee on 02.05.2013

MMA Junkie reports that UFC plans to expand in Asia through a media partnership with MNC Media, which is based in Jakarta, Indonesia. The country is home to 238 million people. There is also a plan to bring live UFC events to the country, as well as a fighter development program that will help build talent in the country to help MMA grow as a sport in that part of the world.

The development program will launch this month in Indonesia and includes tryouts on March 9-10. UFC will send chosen fighters to a training camp in Jarkata to help narrow down the list of candidates, who will then travel to the US to work with MMA trainers before eventually fighting in the UFC.

Mark Fischer, the executive vice president and managing director of UFC Asia, said: "We're delighted to partner on these initiatives with MNC Media, by far Indonesia's No. 1 integrated media group, and very excited about growth prospects here. Our partnership with MNC Media will bring our wide range of UFC programming to tens of millions of potential new UFC fans throughout Indonesia, while also developing our sport in this vast market."

UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson went to Jarkarta to be a part of the announcement. He added: "I'm so excited about the UFC expanding to Indonesia, such a big new market for the sport of MMA. The UFC-MNC fighter development program will bring new opportunities for Indonesian fighters to hone their skills and pursue their dreams. Everyone knows that martial arts were born in Asia now it's time to create UFC world champions from Asia."

The UFC announced the partnership with MNC Media in November while in Macau, China, for a UFC on FUEL TV event.
