Marcelo Guimares is Excited to Fight at the Saitama Super Arena for UFC on Fuel TV 8
Posted by Jeffrey Harris on 03.02.2013

MMAjunkie recently spoke with UFC fighter Marcelo Guimares who faces Hyun Gyu Lim at UFC on Fuel TV 8. Here are some highlights:

Why fighting at the Saitama Super Arena is so important to him: "The first fight I ever watched was Wanderlei Silva and Kazushi Sakuraba at Saitama Super Arena. That's when I decided to train MMA."

How he got started in MMA: "In 2006, I did my first fight because I wanted to know if that's what I wanted to do. So I tried it out, and I decided that's what I wanted to do, but I knew I needed to get better at some points, so I spent those years just working on the things I knew I had to improve. In 2010, I came back. I won my first fight just because I really wanted to win, not because of my skills. I saw that my opponent was way more technical, so I knew I had to get better at that. I knew I wasn't going to be able to win every fight just because of my will. I needed to really know what I was doing, so I decided to go train...Before I committed to MMA, I wanted to be a top athlete in all of the different disciplines. I wanted to the best in jiu-jitsu and the best in wrestling. Once I felt that way, I knew I could go to MMA.

Why he's excited to fight at the Saitama Super Arena: "This is a huge opportunity to fight at Saitama Super Arena and at an event where Wanderlei is the main event. Before the fight, everything has been very motivating. I've even been training with Wanderlei, so it's been incredible."

Unfortunately for Guimares, Lim isn't interested in being a part of his opponent's fairy tale story. The promotional newcomer comes to the UFC on the strength of a five-fight win streak and has earned seven of his 10 career wins by knockout. "I know what everyone else knows: He's got a long reach, and he always moves forward," Guimares said of his foe. "He punches a lot, and he's a great athlete. But I'm always moving forward, too. It's going to be a great fight."

How he expects the fight to go: "Once I'm inside of the cage, I disconnect from everything else. It's just me and my opponent, and the rest of the emotion has to be out of there. My goal is to win this fight and compete at least once more this year. Little by little, I want to create my place in the UFC. I just thank all the fans of this sport and the UFC for giving me this opportunity. As long as there is blood in my veins, I will be fighting and trying to conquer my division."
