Light heavyweight battle will be a rematch eight years in the making…
Brazilian news outlet Tatame.com cites sources in reporting Mauricio "Shogun" Rua" and "Lil Nog" Antonio Rogerio Nogueira have verbally agreed to fight in June.
The bout will not be on June 8 for the The Ultimate Fighter Brazil 2 card which will be headlined by heavyweights Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Fabricio Werdum, but rather late in the month. UFC 161 is scheduled for June 15 in Canada and the company has not announced any shows between then and the July 6 Las Vegas card, expected to feature Anderson Silva and Chris Weidman's middleweight title fight.
The two light heavyweights originally fought at Pride Criticial Countdown 2005 in Saitama, Japan in the middleweight grand prix quarterfinals (Shogun knocked out Rampage Jackson to advance, Lil Nog submitted Dan Henderson). Rua won by unanimous decision and went on to knock out both Alistair Overeem and Ricardo Arona to win the tournament in what was the greatest single year for a fighter until 2011 with Jon Jones (when he defeated Ryan Bader, Shogun, Rampage and Lyoto Machida).
When Nogueira lost in 2005, it was just the second defeat of his career that stage and ended an eight-fight winning streak. Most recently, he has won his past two fights, finishing Tito Ortiz and in an upset, earning a decision against Rashad Evans.
Shogun has not won or lost consecutive fights since 2009, trading outcomes since his first fight with Machida. Last year, he finished Brandon Vera during the summer but closed 2012 with a decision loss to Alexander Gustafsson.
