Could have title implications...
MMA Junkie reports that a welterweight fight between Rory MacDonald (15-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) and Robbie Lawler (21-9 MMA, 6-3 UFC) will happen at UFC 167, which takes place on November 16 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Verbal agreements are in place but contracts haven't been signed. Both fighters are coming off big wins and could be closer to a title shot with a victory here.
MacDonald beat Jake Ellenberger via decision at UFC on FOX 8. He has said he will not fight welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre., who is his training partner and the current champion. However, GSP will fight Johny Hendricks on the same show and many are predicting Hendricks will get the win.
Lawler knocked out Bobby Voelker with a head kick before MacDonald's win. He is on a roll since coming back to the UFC after Strikeforce closed earlier this year. He has back-to-back KO wins over Voelker and Josh Koscheck.
UFC President Dana White has been praising Lawler and recently criticized Rory MacDonald for his UFC on FOX 8 fight on July 27. He added: "Rory didn't do anything to try and finish [Ellenberger] and put a stamp on it and make a statement, not only to the world, but to the guys that are in the division."
However, before that same show, White said that MacDonald will fight St-Pierre if he gets a title shot. He said: "If you don't think he wants to be the world champion and make the kind of money that Georges St-Pierre makes, you're crazy, my friend."
