A new partnership...
MMA Junkie reports that UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson (19-2 MMA, 7-0 UFC) is now being sponsored by the NASCAR Phoenix International Raceway. He will also drive the pace-car at the NASCAR Spring Cup Series at Phoenix race on November 10 (airing on ESPN). NASCAR will sponsor Henderson for his fight with Anthony Pettis (16-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC) next week at UFC 164.
Phoenix International Raceway president Bryan R. Sperber (who also sponsored Anderson Silva and Dominick Cruz before fights) said: "We are truly delighted to be supporting Benson Henderson in his upcoming title fight. Having a local champion represented PIR in this important bout will be an exciting moment for all our NASCAR fans across the valley and around the state."
PIR's logo will be on Henderson's walkout T-Shirt and fight banner for the fight on August 31. NASCAR worked with Niner Sports Marketing President and Founder Craig Conley on the sponsorship. Henderson currently lives in Phoenix and trains at the MMA Lab in Glendale.
Henderson said: "I am so happy and honored to be part of the PIR family. Phoenix has become home for me, and I am so excited to be part of such a great event in my adopted hometown."
Pettis is a replacement for the injured T.J. Grant. Henderson has defended his title three times consecutively. He previously fought Pettis in 2010 for WEC's final show, where Pettis won by unanimous decision due to his "Showtime" kick and won the WEC title. It is Henderson's only loss in the past six-and-a-half years and his past 18 fights.
