He was 25...
NBC4i and MMA Junkie report that MMA bantamweight Cornelius Godfrey (8-1) was killed in a motorcycle accident in Ohio last night. Godfrey went pro in 2011 and had six stoppages during his career.
He died when his motorcycle crashed into a guardrail in Columbus. His wife pinged his cell phone when she hadn't heard from him in a couple of hours. This led her to an intersection where the crash happened, and she found parts of of the cycle. A police helicopter eventually found Godfrey and the motorcycle. He was leaving the Hamilton Pub a mile away when he hit the guardrail and flipped over, falling down a six foot embankment. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:45 PM.
Godfrey is from West Virginia and is a Golden Gloves champion. He boxed professionally but decided to go with MMA instead. He started his career with six wins and six stoppages, giving him a spot at XFC 20. He lost there by decision to Shah Bobonis on AXS TV. After that fight, he won by decision over The Ultimate Fighter 14 competitor BJ Ferguson at Spartan FC 17. His most recent win was a decision over Corey Simmons at UVC 23.
