He faces Jason Butcher tonight...
Middleweight MMA fighter Giva Santana (age 41) recently spoke about his upcoming season 9 middleweight tournament bout against Jason Butcher. The bout is set for tonight's Bellator 98 card. Below are some highlights:
Santana on why he fights: "I am well. I train well, and I feel well. Until that changes, I'll keep on fighting. Many people fight to prove something. I fight because it brings me joy. I'm motivated and healthy."
Santana on his loss ot Bruno Santos: "It was a good fight. I had plan A and plan B, but I didn't switch from one to the other soon enough. It took me a while to figure out what he wanted to accomplish in that fight. When I started striking, I think it was too late in the fight. Unfortunately for me, his game plan was not striking or going for submissions; it was pushing me against the fence."
Santana on Jason Butcher: "He may be good on the ground, but I've been doing this my entire life, so he won't be at any sort of advantage."
Santana on this season's middleweight tournament: "It has a lot of very tough guys. Brian Rogers is a great veteran. Brett Cooper hits very hard. But all that matters to me is getting past my first opponent in the tournament. It's a like a jiu-jitsu competition. You can't be a world champion if you overlook your first opponent. My goal is to win my fight and then watch my opponents in action after the fact."
