On October 4...
MMA Junkie reports that Bellator's middleweight tournament semifinals for season 9 will take place at Bellator 102 on October 4 at the Visalia Convention Center in California. The main card will air on Spike TV after preliminary fights on Spike.com.
The semifinals include Mikkel Parlo (10-1 MMA, 2-1 BMMA) vs Jason Butcher (7-0 MMA, 4-0 BMMA) and Brennan Ward (7-1 MMA, 3-1 BMMA) vs. Perry Filkins (8-1 MMA, 2-0 BMMA). Additional fights will be announced in the next few weeks.
Parlo beat Brian Rogers at Bellator 98 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut on Saturday, with a unanimous decision and two 30-26 scores. This was his first win after a loss to Sultan Aliev in February. Butcher managed to get a TKO win over Giva Santana on the same show, and Santana retired after the loss.
Ward found out the day before the tournament that he would replace Andreas Spang, who was declared unfit to compete by the athletic commission. After cutting open Justin Torrey, he won via TKO. Filkins managed to defeat Jeremy Kimball via submission (rear naked choke) to extend a winning streak to six fights.
The winner of the tournament may meet middleweight champion Alexander Shlemenko, who defeated Brett Cooper by unanimous decision to retain last week. Doug Marshall was next for a shot, but was forced out with an injury. Whenever the Marshall-Shlemenko fight happens, the tournament winner will get the next shot.
