The severity revealed...
MMA Junkie reports that after his loss to 31-second submission loss to Rousimar Palhares (15-5 MMA, 8-4 UFC)at UFC Fight Night 29, welterweight Mike Pierce (17-6 MMA, 9-4 UFC) has suffered a sprained MCL and a completely torn ligament on the outside of his left ankle.
He said: "[The doctor] says I should be feeling a lot better in 2-3 weeks and that I shouldn't need surgery, but to check back with him at that point. So that's good news.
His coach, Phil Claud, said earlier in the week that the initial diagnosis was a sprained MCL and surgery wasn't necessary. A final checkup was required to decide if that was accurate.
After causing the injury due to keeping the hold on Pierce's leg, Palhares was fired from the UFC. He held the submission even after several taps and referee intervention. After the two were finally separated, UFC withheld the "Submission of the Night" bonus pending an investigation. The submission was removed from his contract, and the Comissao Atletica Brasileira de MMA (CABMMA) suspended him for 120 days.
Pierce received a 180-day medical suspension but he can be cleared earlier by a doctor. However, that could take several weeks or even months.
