Back in 2008...
In an interview with MMA Junkie, former UFC fighter Charles McCarthy spoke about his fight with Michael Bisping at UFC 83 in 2008, as well as using his mistakes in his career to his advantage. McCarthy lost the fight to Bisping by TKO in the first round. He retired a week later with a record of 10-5. All ten of his wins were by submission.
On how the fight happened: "I talked to [UFC matchmaker] Joe Silva and said, ‘I want to fight for the title.' That was the only thing I was really interested in, so I basically asked who he could give me right then that would put me in that position. He said, ‘I need someone to fight Michael Bisping. Would you take that?' I told him absolutely I would."
On underestimating Bisping: "I was just wrong about him. He was better than I gave him credit for. I let my dislike for his antics take away from my respect for his ability, and it ended up costing me in the fight."
On his work as a manager: "Being in this for a while and seeing all the different characters in this space, you become very protective over the people in the industry who are there for the right reasons. The talent, you want them to just be talent. You don't want them to have to worry about all that other stuff. I didn't want it to be a volume business for us."
