UPDATED: Hendricks vs. Lawler Set for Vacant Welterweight Title
Posted by Dan Plunkett on 12.13.2013

UPDATE: Dana White has corrected his statement from the conference call in which he stated Jon Jones vs. Glover Teixeira would still headline UFC 171. Jones vs. Teixeira will headline UFC 172, while Hendricks vs. Lawler will main event UFC 171. At this time, the date and location of UFC 172 is unknown.

ORIGINAL: UFC President Dana White announced on today's conference call Johny Hendricks would battle Robbie Lawler for the vacant welterweight championship. The match will serve as the co-main event under the Jon Jones vs. Glover Teixeira light heavyweight title fight at UFC 171 in Dallas, Texas.

Georges St-Pierre vacated the welterweight championship on the same conference call in order to take time away from the sport.

Hendricks most recently lost a controversial split decision to St-Pierre last month. Lawler returned to the UFC in February and defeated Josh Koscheck, Bobby Voelker, and most recently Rory MacDonald.
