“This isn’t going to be a war of words.”
UFC welterweight fighter and top title contender Robbie Lawler recently spoke about his reaction to getting offered to fight for the vacant welterweight title at UFC 171. Lawler will now face Johny Hendricks for the vacant belt in the main event. Below are some highlights.
Lawler on getting the call to fight for the title while he was out eating with his wife and son and his reaction: "Alright…Nothing really surprises me. I just try to always be prepared, and when opportunity knocks, I've just got to be ready.
Lawler's thoughts on Georges St-Pierre vacating the title to take a leave of absence: "I'm not too worried about what he's up to. He needs to do what's best for him."
Lawler on getting to his position to fight for the UFC title: "I've been in this sport for a long time, and I feel like I put myself in the position where this would happen and I'd be fighting for a title. It's not like I won the lottery or something. I earned my spot and beat some good guys, so I was just waiting for my opportunity."
Lawler's thoughts on Hendricks: "He's not very tall, but he's big. He's a bully, and he knocks people out. I think it's really rare to have a wrestler with that much power. He comes out to take your head off. He's a strong wrestler, and he's just powerful, plain and simple."
Lawler's thoughts on the matchup: "This isn't going to be a war of words. I'll have a chance to show what I'm capable of and he will too…I just have to be me, and figure out a way to land some punches, kicks and knees, and just go out there and work."
