MMA Junkie reports that Simeon Thoresen (17-4-1) has signed a five-fight deal with Cage Warriors after over a year away from fighting. He was released by the UFC after a two-fight losing streak.
He said: "Cage Warriors is a great organization, very professionally run, and I'm excited to be a part of it. I'm really excited about fighting again in 2014."
He has fought for the promotion once in 2008. He defeated Matt Thorne by submission in 41 seconds in Nottingham, England. This gave him eight submission wins in his first nine fights, with the other win from a first-round TKO. Thoresen then fought for BAMMA, defeating John Maguire, and won the welterweight title for England's Ultimate Warrior Challenge, which got him noticed by the UFC. He debuted at UFC on FUEL TV 2 and beat Besam Yousef by submission in the second round in Sweden in April 2012. However, he then lost to Seth Baczynski at UFC 152 (September 2012, first round KO) and David Mitchell at UFC on FOX 6 (January 2013, decision).
Fifteen of his seventeen wins have been by submission and his five most recent wins were by rear naked choke. He has ten choke finishes overall with five armbars. His return bout for Cage Warriors has not been decided. The promotion holds its first event of the year, Cage Warriors 64, next week at The Forum in London, with the main card streamed on MMA Junkie.
