Wrestling Coach Kenny Monday Reveals How Eddie Alvarez Got Injured
Posted by Joseph Lee on 05.15.2014

In an interview with MMA Junkie, wrestling coach Kenny Monday revealed the injury that sidelined Eddie Alvarez (25-3 MMA, 9-1 BMMA) before his scheduled trilogy fight with Michael Chandler (12-1 MMA, 9-1 BMMA) at Bellator 120. Chandler will now fight Will Brooks (13-1 MMA, 5-1 BMMA).

On when Alvarez's injury happened: "I was watching the wrestling practice. He and Abel Trujillo were going at it. These guys, they battle. Of course, when you need to train for a wrestler like Michael Chandler, it was going to be a tough fight. It was just a situation where he shot, and then – I teach a real hard sprawl where you're really hit the guy with your hip and kind of knock him off – and Abel kind of executed it, and kind of caught Eddie."

On the blow that gave him a concussion: "But then he kind caught a heel to his jaw too. It was just one of those practices. … There weren't any cheap shots or anything like that. It's just one of those deals."

On Alvarez' reaction to the injury: "His spirits are high, but man, of course we were disappointed. As a fan and as a coach, you want to see the fight. You want to be part of it when those guys battle. We all feel bad about the situation. … But Eddie, he'll be back as strong as ever."
