MMA Junkie reports that Alexander Volkov (22-4 MMA, 6-1 BMMA) just beat Blagoi Ivanov (11-1 MMA, 6-1 BMMA) at Bellator 120 (second round submission) and Bellator is looking to give him a rematch with heavyweight champion Vitaly Minakov (14-0 MMA, 5-0 BMMA). Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney said the fight will likely happen sometime this fall on Spike TV. While at the Landers Center in Southaven, Mississippi (where the event happened), Rebney said: "It's going to be a spectacular fight of two unbelievable heavyweights."
Their first fight lasted less than three minutes at Bellator 108 in November. Volkov lost by TKO due to punches in the first round. It was his first title defense after winning the vacant belt, previously held by Cole Konrad (who retired). Volkov then entered the season ten heavyweight tournament. He beat Mark Holata and Siala-Mou Siliga by first round stoppage in the opening rounds. He then beat Ivanov with a rear-naked choke at the 68 seconds in the second round. His tournament win comes two years after he almost died from a stab wound in Bulgaria, which caused complications left him in a medically-induced coma.
Volkov said: "I respect my opponent; he's a very tough guy. He has great wrestling. But I prepared for this fight very hard. I'm ready for a title shot, and I'm very excited."
Volkov has won thirteen of his past fourteen fights. Minakov, meanwhile, defended his belt in April with a unanimous decision over Cheick Kongo.
