"I would've thrown the towel in..."
Speaking to reporters in a media scrum after UFC 173, UFC President Dana White talked about Jamie Varner's gutsy performance in his fight against James Krause in the opening bout of the main PPV card. Early in the fight, Varner broke his foot in two places and tore his ligaments. He continued to fight until the end of the round before the fight was stopped. Below are some highlights from White discussing the issue:
White on Varner fighting through the injury: "Usually guys quit. Guys will tap out and say, ‘I broke my ankle. I'm laid out.' But there was no quit in that kid. So that's one of those situations where he kept going. I don't know. That's a tough [decision to make]. But, by the end of that round, he was done."
White on how he would've thrown in the towel if he was in Varner's corner: "If that was my guy, I would have thrown the towel in in a second...There are times when you see somebody just taking unbelievable damage. Jamie Varner sucked it up. He had a broken leg, which had to be unbelievably painful, and he just – I can't say enough about the kid. … Varner's all heart."
