"It means something to beat Jon Jones."
Speaking at the UFC 173 post-fight press confence, UFC light heavyweight fighter Daniel Cormier talked about his win over Dan Henderson and possibly fighting Jon Jones for the light heavyweight title. Jon Jones is next scheduled to face Alexander Gustafsson in a rematch for the belt, possibly on August 30 at UFC 177. Below are some highlights from the presser:
Cormier on wanting a title shot: "I've earned a title shot,. I've got five top 10 wins. I'm undefeated. I haven't lost a round. I haven't lost a fight...Yeah, my resume speaks for itself."
Cormier on wanting to face Jon Jones for the belt more than Gustafsson: "It means something to beat Jon Jones. I know [we all] praise Alexander Gustafsson for what he's done. He's a great fighter. But it means a little more to beat a Jon Jones."
Cormier on how he matches up with Jon Jones: "Against Jones, that's a tough hill to climb, man. There's just no (easy way to) beating Jon Jones. I'd have to have my best performance. Knowing I was fighting for the title shot, I'd train as though I didn't (just) have my best performance (against Henderson). I just think styles make fights, and I match up well with him. We haven't really seen him on his back for an extended period of time, but if I get on top of him, I think I can hold him down and get some offense off on him."
Cormier on how he could possibly fight again instead of waiting for a title shot: "If they come up with something good, I'll fight. I'm not afraid of anybody. I can beat every one of these guys, so I'll fight them all. … I want to be the champion. That's really why I started fighting. I'm 35 years old, and it's not like I'm a kid. I can't wait too long."
