Marcus Brimage vs Russell Doane Set For UFC 175

Sherdog reports that Marcus Brimage (6-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC) will drop from featherweight to bantamweight for a fight with Russell Doane (13-3 MMA, 1-0 UFC) at UFC 175. The fight happens on July 5 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

Doane debuted in January with a submission win (via triangle choke) over Leandro Issa. Eleven of his thirteen wins have been by KO, TKO or submission. Brimage was a member of the cast for The Ultimate Fighter 14. He has wins over names like Stephen Bass, Maximo Blanco and Jim Hettes, but lost his most recent fight to Conor McGregor at UFC on Fuel TV 9.

Team Guardian confirmed the fight and asked the fighter some questions about it. Here are highlights:

On facing Doane: "I see him eating a lot of shots, I see him being hard to put away. And, if it goes to the ground, I see him as very accomplished in that area, too."

On if this is a good fight for him: "Truth be told, I wouldn't rather come back any other way. For my whole career, I've been the guy who isn't supposed to win. Why not start off my run at bantamweight the same way?"

On dropping to bantamweight: "You get used to being short, so I got used to having to look up to people because I'm short. It never dawned on me that there are other short people fighting, just at a division lower. I have experience dealing with bigger guys. Now, I've got the speed, power and the skill-set to match it at 135. I've never been on an even playing field my entire life. I grew up playing football you guys don't even want to know how big the jokers that I was playing against."
