"That's going to be mine by the end of the year."
MMAjunkie Radio recently interviewed MMA fighter Melvin Guillard, who is set to face Gesias Cavalcante tongiht at WSOF 11 on NBC. Below are some highlights. Guillard failed make weight for the fight at weigh-ins yesterday.
Guillard on coming into WSOF: "They brought me to this organization for a reason: to be the face of the organization as far as lightweights, and I'm going to do that."
Guillard on his intention to get the WSOF lightweight title: "That's going to be mine by the end of the year. I'm coming for Gaethje. By the end of the year, I'm going to be champion. Guarantee it."
Guillard on his relationship in the past with Cavalcante: "There were times where he told me, ‘Melvin, shut up, you talk too much.' I was like, ‘All right, cool, I'll shut up,' out of respect. I have respect for all the guys. There was never any disrespect going on.
Guillard on there being no rivalry for the fight: "It's two fighters fighting to get a title shot, and that's what it is. It's nothing more, nothing less. We're going to be boys after; we actually rode here on the plane, and I told him, ‘Loser has to buy the winner dinner, husband and wife,' because we're both married. He's going to be taking me to dinner."
Guillard's thoughts on Justin Gaethje: "He's very misleading. You look at him, and he doesn't look much like an athlete. But the kid has got skills. He's got heart, too; he can take a beating. He's one of those guys that he's tough to knock out, and he's just hard-nosed. He's a really good athlete and a good wrestler, too."
