Both men main event separate shows this weekend...
In an interview with MMA Junkie, B.J. Penn (16-9-2 MMA, 12-8-2 UFC) spoke about his 2005 loss to Lyoto Machida (21-4 MMA, 13-4 UFC) in K-1. Penn will fight Frankie Edgar (16-4-1 MMA, 10-4-1 UFC) in a featherweight main event at the TUF 19 Finale tomorrow night. Machida challenges Chris Weidman (11-0 MMA, 7-0 UFC) for the middleweight title tonight at UFC 175.
On how the fight happened: "From my understanding, the fight got put together because K-1 called us and said Machida and them have a guy that wants to fight you. (They said), ‘He's a really good street fighter, but no one knows him. I said, ‘No one knows him? Tell Machida I'll fight him.' Then it got put together."
On his plan at the time: "I remember I had a game plan where I was going to go swing and try to knock him out when he grabs me and pushed me on the ropes. I wasn't going to use as much energy so I could get my chance to knock him out again."
On Machida's power: "I remember him kicking me so hard in my ribs one time – it was crazy. That's how the fight went and he ended up walking away the victor."
