Rafael Nunes Discusses Fighting Kojo Ando at ONE FC 18
Posted by Larry Csonka on 07.10.2014

- Rafael Nunes recently spoke with MMAjunkie.com about his ONE FC 18 fight with Kojo Ando. Here are the highlights…

On His Road to MMA: "By now, I've participated in some 150 jiu-jitsu championships, both Brazilian and worlds. I have various championships from Brazil and South America. I made it to the finals of Mundials. After getting serious about jiu-jitsu, that's when I learned about MMA. I got signed up for an amateur bout, even though I didn't know how to fight standing up. My professor just told me to get a takedown and go for a submission. After a couple of months of training, I did three amateur fights, and I won all three, the first by KO, and the other two by submission. I was told I had a talent, so I dedicated myself 100 percent to the sport of MMA."

On Fighting Kojo Ando: "Most of my opponents have way more experience and a better record than me before I faced them," he said. "My second-to-last opponent even fought Renan Barao at some point. Now that I'll be fighting in Asia, where fighters tend to have great standup, I think it will be a very strategic bout. But we've been preparing for it and I feel very ready. Actually, I've been expecting to face Koji Ando for a long time. Even before I received confirmation, I was already training and focusing on him. By the time I received confirmation, I was already near the end of my camp. I plan for it to be a quick fight. I am very explosive. I won't waste any time gauging distance or studying him. My intention is to knock him down and make sure he doesn't get up."
