He's out for a long time...
UFC 174 headliner Ali Bagautinov failed his championship test against Demetrious Johnson and his drug test conducted by the British Columbia Athletic Commission. The BCAC announced on Thursday that Bagautinov was the latest in MMA's string of random drug test failures. The flyweight tested positive for erythropoietin, or EPO, one of the drugs the now retired Chael Sonnen tested positive for on a June 5 test. EPO is used to increase stamina and has a relatively short half-life, making use difficult to detect.
According to the BCAC's statement, Bagautinov passed the standard fight day screening administered on June 14, but failed a random test given on June 2. Commissioner Dave Maedel decided to suspend Bagautinov for one year due to the infraction.
Seven other UFC 174 fighters were tested, including flyweight champion Johnson, and passed. The commission did not specify whether Bagautinov was the only fighter tested randomly outside of fight day.
