Glover Teixeira vs Phil Davis May Happen At UFC 179
Posted by Larry Csonka on 07.31.2014

Combate (Via MMA Junkie) reports that verbal agreements are in place for Glover Teixeira (22-3 MMA, 5-1 UFC) to fight Phil Davis (12-2 MMA, 8-2 UFC) in the fall, possibly at UFC 179 in Rio de Janeiro. UFC has yet to officially announce the fight. UFC 179 happens on October 25 at the Maracanazinho Gymnasium in Rio. The only fight set is a featherweight title fight between champion Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes, a rematch UFC 142.

There were some who thought Davis should have been ahead of Teixeira for a shot at light heavyweight champion Jon Jones in the spring. Teixeira got the shot at UFC 172 and came up short, losing by unanimous decision (all scores 50-45). It ended a 20-fight winning streak and a five-fight winning streak in the UFC, which included stoppages of Kyle Kingsbury, Fabio Maldonado, James Te Huna and Ryan Bader, as well as a decision win over Quinton "Rampage" Jackson.

Davis, meanwhile, has fought twice in Brazil in his past four fights. He beat Wagner Prado in Rio at UFC 153 by submission and Lyoto Machida in Rio at UFC 163 by unanimous decision. He was on a three-fight winning streak before a unanimous decision loss to Anthony Johnson at UFC 172.
