Askren looking to win another title belt…
MMAjunkie Radio recently interviewed ONE FC fighter Ben Askren, who faces Nobutatsu Suzuki for the welterweight title at ONE FC 19 on August 29. Below are some highlights.
Askren on what winning the title would mean to him: "I think it would just further my argument that I'm the best welterweight on the planet. I've already won one major organization's belt and held it for a long time. I'm on the doorstep of winning another major organization's belt, and in the foreseeable future I don't see anyone taking it from me."
Askren's plan for the fight: "My plan is the same as always: Take him down, beat him up, get my hand raised and walk away with the belt. I love winning. Everyone loves winning and hates losing. I've put in a lot of work in my life, so it feels good to be rewarded every time I step in the cage so far with that ‘W,' it's a great feeling. I don't think anyone has the skill set to beat me, so I'm just going to keep on racking up wins. There's been very few people who have gotten as far as I have undefeated fighting in a major organization."
Askren on his training: "Sometimes in practice I'll do no takedowns and just do standup, but the point of the fight is to win the fight. I believe I'm a high-level competitor, and in order to do that I need to focus on what's necessary to win every single time. I'm not going to be an idiot and stand around and think I'm a striker."
