Fedor Emelianenko vs. Tim Sylvia set for July 19th

Hey look! Fedor's fighting a Top 10 Fighter!
Both MMAMania.com and Sherdog.com have confirmed that Fedor Emelianenko, considered by many to be the best heavyweight in MMA, will be fighting Tim Sylvia, the former UFC heavyweight champion on July 19th. According to MMAMania.com, the fight is expected to be held under the newly created Affliction/Golden Boy promotions led by Oscar De La Hoya. Emelianenko's last fight came against Hong Man Choi as part of the Yarennoka card last year. Tim Sylvia was released from his UFC contract with one fight remaining on his contract after losing to Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira at UFC 81.
I think this is a stupid move personally -Tim is not prepared as witnessed by his performance against Big Nog
But also if Tim manges a win -t taints Fedors win streak and also his worth when building for the fight people want to see !!
Which is Fedor and Couture !

I'd be tempted to pay for it if I didn't know exactly how it's going to go:
Fedor smacks him Sylvia once in the mouth, takes him down and breaks his arm like Frank Mir did. Fedor's ten times the fighter Mir is, standing up and on the ground, and this one, I'm afraid, is academic.

wow, top ten, sylvia should give him a good go, and will beat him in the stand up, but he is way too easily submitted, and thats whats going to happen

is this a ring or a cage?????

Tim better work on getting every iota of advantage from his reach. That´s the only chance he has.
Hypothetically, of course, since he has that reach advantage, he could be able to either keep Fedor at bay for the distance or (yeah, right) KO Fedor. But, like I said, that´s just hypothetical. Fedor´s going to eat Timmy alive.
The good news? By the time the bell rings, it´ll be two and a half years since Fedor has fought credible opposition. Now, I guess we´ll see just how good a shape he is in.

fedor has a lot more to lose in this fight than sylvia. if fedor loses to sylvia he loses to a man who just lost to the guy most fans use as a basis for fedors greatness (nogiera). think about all the arguments made on this site about how good fedor is. "he owned nogiera twice" and the counter argument "but that was 4 years ago".
if fedor loses he will instantly lose number one heavyweight in the world and #1 lb for lb fighter in the world. with that gone fedor will lose the ability to ask for multi million dollar fight contracts because now hes lost to the only top 10 fighter hes faced in years and spoiled his chance at name recognition with the casual american mma fan.
On the flip side what does sylvia have to lose? Nothing. if he loses, he loses to the #1 heavyweight in the world who many feel is the #1 lb for lb fighter in the world. not to mention that any halfway intelligent mma fan knows fedor should kill him. Now lets look at what sylvia has to gain. everything. a victory over fedor will make him the most desired heavyweight not under a ufc contract, and will allow him to tout himself as the best in the world (that would be incorrect but you know he'd do it). Tims asking price would skyrocket and allow him to goback to dana and say fuck you, give me a shit load of cash and maybe i'll consider fighting for u again.
the end point here is that sylvia has everything to gain and nothing to lose while fedor has little to gain and everything to lose, i really hope sylvia realizes this and goes into this fight like its the most important fight of his career, because you know fedor won't. I am a known sylvia hater but i would still love to see him knock that cocky russians head off and topple him off his pedistal (no matter how incredibly unlikely it is)

I bet Fedor is really happy he didn't sign with the UFC. Thier current champ is a guy he already beat, and their last 3 champs are free agents.

umm 4yrs ago Nog was better - he's in ring shape and stamina ha sonly gotten worse and dumb to do lay and prey
his fighting skills have deteriorated on a grand level to where he
is all but useless and largely sluggish when he fights now

@WTF
you're missing the point of what i was saying, i was not trying to compliment big nog nor was i saying that he is better than fedor. i was referencing the ongoing argument between people who say fedor should be ranked behind big nog due to lack of big name fights and people who say fedor is still number one because he beat big nog. i was referencing that argument because if fedor loses to the man big nog just beat then all the fedor detractors will have a field day and a legitimate argument to put big nog ahead of fedor hence my central point of fedor having alot to lose in his fight with sylvia. i never stated my own opinion of who is better fedor or big nog and if you want my opinion i feel that dispite not having any big name fights in the past couple years fedor is still the number one heavyweight although if he does somehow lose to sylvia i will change my view to big nog being number 1

Ok i see but i woudl gather your saying if Fedor gets beat by Tim you will reference Big Nog as #1 in the world would largely be inaccurate very much so
considering where does your views of Couture fit in you thoughts? Mir or Arloski? Tim has never beaten Mir and Arloski was robbed in his 3rd meeting with Tim ! What of Mark Hunt or Crocop or Barnett beat Couture and Big Nog in 06 or Bunettello that never got his rematch with Arloski , Pauls only lost 3 times since Aug 2001 !! Hell Dan Henderson beat Big Nog in 2000 sure it was 2000 but a win none the less !

fedor dominates like usual...couture was half of tim and messed him up...fedor will continue to be the man and win over couture as well

To bad we have all these newcommers to the MMA world messing things up. Instead of watching this fight in the UFC where it belongs, were being subjected to subpar fights in a subpar venue.
