Suge Knight MMA Fight?
Posted by Ashish on 05.16.2008

Quinton Jackson told TMZ today that Suge Knight got drunk at a party earlier this week and was punched out by a 5'10'' barber. Video of the incident hit the 'net earlier this week. An MMA promotion is now apparently offering $1 million for New Year's Eve fight in Las Vegas between Knight and and the barber.

Ah, good ol' New Years Eve... fights of freaks.

Is Suge famous enough in Japan for him to be worth $1M? Since it's generally the Japanese who go crazy for the freak fights that night.

I'd pay $15.99 to watch him get his ass kicked.

How big is Knight? Because 5'10" is average height, nothing freakish about that. The WWE fans love the huge guys like The Big Show who is seven feet and 440 pounds, and Great Khali who is 7 foot three and around 420.

Japanese fans tend to appreciate more athleticism. In Japan the fans have a greater understanding of ground fighting techniques and submissions than American fans who prefer fistfights. I have to admit, the Gracie guard is an awfully gay looking technique. I mean come on, who in a fight is going to wrap his thighs around the guy he's fighting and pull him in towards his own groin!?!? Any guy would just knee the guy in the balls if they tried that junk. That would never work in a real fight, That Gracie Guard is fake as hell as far as working in any real fight. But then MMA isn't a pure fight. The outcome favors the man who can best exploit the rules to his own advantage. For example, I've seen fighters purposely leave the back of their heads exposed while covering up other areas because they know the rules protect them from getting hit in the back of the head. In a real fight they'd just get hit in the back of their head and wind up badly injured. There are other examples of fighters getting into ridiculous positions in UFC and other MMA fights that would leave them extremely vulnerable in a real fight but they do it because those areas, like the back of the neck or the spine are protected by the rules. So they don't have to worry about defending them. It leads to fighters using all kinds of fighting positions that would never work in a real fight. The winners are those who can best use techniques where the rules protect them from being hit and the fighters that can use the rules to their best advantage are often the winners.

For example, when Brock Lesnar fought Frank Mir, Lesnar was winning the fight. He was punching Mir in the back of the head and the referee stopped the fight. In a real fight there would have been nobody to save Mir and those blows to the back of Mir's head which Mir was not defending would have led to a victory by Lesnar.

Appreciate the length of the post Ole, but really, I'm not sure what your point was. That 5'10 is a normal height? That the Gracie Guard is fake because you couldn't use it in a "real" fight? That exploiting the rules of a contest is inherrently bad?

Why are you even comparing street fighting to something that is finally being accepted as a legitimate sport? Just like every other sport, there are rules that make it different from when a group of bums, friends, goofballs, buddies, whatever get together and do something.

That's like discrediting the NBA for calling reach in fouls because I've played streetball games where you have to draw blood before being called on a foul.

I meant freak fight as in a meaningless novelty fight- not that Suge is comparable to the Big Show or Hong-Man Choi

Ole is a joke, not even hundred like big show but cheer him as he face but not "favorite" wrestler. Admit it, you know. Size no matter, tall no matter but use mind and temper... get learn. POKEBALL TO KNIGHT!!!! By the way.. Suge will get group kill him anyway. Remember, Suge kill Tupac & Notorious, both guy haven't hit Suge but Baber dare to hit it.

WHO ELSE DARE TO HIT SUGE KNIGHT? I bet this 411 user won't.

Ole you do know when gacie was fighting there were no rules outside of fishhooking and eyepoking. Everything else you could do including shots to the groin. And that so called fake gracie gaurd won EVERY time. In a one on one fight with noone around jujistsu wins everytime. In a bar fight with other people around not the best idea. Thats because other people could get involved. Although I'v used judo and juts at bars and concerts but I wasnt looking to hurt the guys just hold him protect myself till security could remove him. And honestly its the best way to handle a situation no reason hurting people just because you can. As M.A. you should be above that. Thats why I like gracie style it the safest way to protect yourself one on one for both parties. It why so many law officals have started studying it. I alway send guys out of the academy straight to a gracie school and then off to judo or wrestling or mauy tai. Just cause I like mauy tai. And that clinch is really usefull in small areas.

It's true that in the early days of UFC that Gracie Jiu-jitsu dominated the first several tournaments. Is that maybe because even though there were almost no rules, these guys were still sportsmen and didn't want to resort to a groin strike? I just don't see how the Gracie guard could be so effective against an opponent who was willing to use knee strikes to the groin since the person doing the gaurd is spreading his legs to put the guard on, leaving his groin area totally exposed.

Also, as you said, the ground is a bad place to be in a street fight where the guy you are fighting is likely to have firends with him who could start kicking you in the head if you went to the ground. I think Muay Thai would be much safer in most street fight environments.

The reason for what I focused on in my post is that the original idea of The Ultimate Fighting Championship was not to make it into a sport but to prove which style of fighting was superior for self defense. If someone is learning martial arts for self defense, there are many things that are done in current UFC fights that would be very bad ideas in real life self defense situations, such as "turtling up" - leaving the back of the head, the neck and the spine exposed.

I do buy UFC PPVs and enjoy a lot of them, but perhaps it would be a good idea to take points away from a guy who is turtling up or getting into any position which would clearly be disastrous in a true fight. This way they could maintain the safety they have now for the fighters, but yet possibly have a more accurate reflection of who is the best actual fighter.

As for "freak fights" I was referring to fights with enormous fighters. Even with novelty fights, well, Tank vs. Kimbo did record buys for their company.

Quinton Jackson is snitch! And bitche too. It let himself "Greg" business with Suge. Greg speak himself which is right sense but Quinton! Anyway, GREG The BARBER is really man, REAL MAN! There no question. Becuz example... this is my genius talk.. Real talk.. So here it is..

GREG have done in a minute, what Tupac, Snoop or the game couldn't do, because they would fear of Suge, like 90's people do. Everybody know who is Bruce Lee, Pai Mo, Mike Tyson, so now, they will know and remember Greg The Barber forever because he is famous and is the one who Knock Suge like nobody would do but himself Greg. By the way, I wish Tupac/Notorious were alive, so Tupac could see who is REAL man! Right now, I bet The Game, Snoop, both were shock and know who is the man.

This wasn't repoted by Quinton jackson. Rather TMZ reported it and Quinton was asked about it outside a club by TMZ 3-4 days after the fact.
