Dana White Addresses Latest UFC Roster Cuts
Posted by Dustin James on 05.22.2008

During the UFC 84 pre-fight conference call, UFC President Dana White addressed the latest round of UFC roster cuts which included Travis Lutter, Jake O'Brien, Tommy Speer, Din Thomas, & Joe Doerksen:

"It's nothing abnormal at all. At the end of the day, the UFC, like I say all the time, it's the place where all the best fighters in the world fight. And after you lose a few, or whatever, you have to go back down and get some wins and come back.

"The guys who are really dedicated to this sport, and they make the cut, they go and get more wins under their belt and end up coming back.

"I can't keep everybody under contract because the way that we do our contracts, depending if you're one of our big stars, we'll have you locked up for six or eight fights, or whatever it might be. They're under long-term contracts.

"Other guys that are trying to make their way up to be Sean Sherks or B.J.s, or whatever it is, they're under a three-fight deal, or a two-fight deal. Some of them are under one-fight deals. It depends."

Leben still fights because he wins more than he loses, and his fights are constantly entertaining. Sylvia was the Champ not like he could cut him for being a boring ass one dimensional fighter when he is the champ of the heavyweight division.... Chuck is Chuck... you know what, never mind, if you are asking why Chuck Liddell is still fighting for the UFC, nothing I say will make you see things any different.

People who complain about Dana White are idiots. He knows what it takes to get people interested, and saying about Chuck Liddel still being there, did you not read the entire comment? Big name guys like Chuck, Tito etc were signed to long term contracts, Liddell is a recognisable person to casual fans, much like Ortiz. They will be kept under contract because they are money fighters.

The other thing you pointed out, yes, Liddell lost 2 matches (Rampage and Jardine), he then beat Wanderlei Silva, and not just beat him, he beat him up. Silva is someone who will make many people's top 10 rankings for the Light Heavyweight division so beating the crap out of him is no small feat.

Who a fighter loses to makes a difference as well.

I am bummed that Din Thomas was cut, but he lost a match he should have been favored in. he's a perfect example of someone who is probably one win from being invited back - much like Lytle, Stout and Guillard have done in the last year or so.

One danger that the UFC may face, however, is losing solid guys to long term deals with EliteXC, Strikeforce, IFL, or another viable option that did not use to exist.
