Matt Lindland Claiming UFC Contracts Are Illegal?

Is "The Law" going after the UFC?
Oregon State Republican House of Representatives candidate (and current Affliction fighter) Matt Lindland has come out publicly and stated that something needs to be done with the UFC fighter's current contract situation:
"The UFC contracts are illegal. Based on the Muhammad Ali (Safety) Act, you cannot be the promoter and the manager at the same time. If they are telling you who and when you are going to fight, they are the manager as well as the promoter."
You can read the Muhammed Ali Safety Act by clicking here.
Someone's upset he didn't get a contract with the UFC.

I you look at the similarities of the two sports there could be a case to be made to try and create such legislation for MMA, but until such time as that actually happens he’s just blowing hot air. The act he references clearly specifies professional boxing. What he’s doing right now is like saying that driving cars on the interstate is illegal because the legal codes governing the use of mopeds ban them from interstates.
If the issue is pushed and a ruling is made that agrees with his POV; then it will be illegal. Right now it’s legal and he’s just a crank.

not many fighters (if any) claim to be represented by the ufc and also fight by the ufc. this makes Lindland's statement useless. There has been numerous cases lately of fighters turning down fights because they didn't have enough time to prepare. If his claim was true, then thse fighters would be out of a job.
It is a little careless, that 411mania would publish shit like this without any real prrof behind it. People look to sites like these for insightful, educated commentary, not useless rumours.

What he's saying is actually quite valid. Like it or not, the Ali act has set a precedence for this type of work. Acts, Laws and court verdicts are often times cited to make new laws or to expand the realm of those laws. I don't care, obviously some of you guys REALLY care. Unless you're under UFC contract (and I doubt any of us are anywhere near qualified to be under such a contract) why should any of us care?

This same business norm is in place in the music industry. You can't promote a singer and manage them at the same time.

I was reading the ali safety act, and technically, this rule should apply to mma....MMA is sanctioned by boxing commissions as a competitive combat sport. This rule was put in place to protect fighters and give them some say in who and when they fight. It was also made to separate managers from promoters as a manager should only be acting in the best interest of the fighter what you have in the ufc is the promotion having control of the fighters future to the point where if you wont fight who they want you to fight they can force you to be benched for a year if you leave the promotion, put you on untelevised undercards....and control your promotion. Fighters need to unionize (fighters association much like a players association) so they can control their futures in the sport. Fighters shouldn't be signing to a promotion, they should be signing to individual fights in the promotion of their choice. A choice they can make based on financial incentives and what is best for their futures. They are the ones putting their ass on the line to prove themselves better than their opponents and its time they got the control and the respect that they deserve.
