Affliction: Banned promoter and match maker comment on July 19 fights, future shows, and attendance figures.
411Mania was in attendance for the post-event press conference featuring Affliction fighters and representatives. Here is a selection of news and notes to come from the event.
Promoter Roy Englebrecht:
* Announced sold out crowd with 13,988 in attendance for the evening
* Pay-per-view buy rates should be available Thursday or Friday this coming week
Match Maker and Affliction MMA VP Tom Atencio
* "All I can say is wow…amazing."
* "There's competition now."
* Stated that a second Affliction PPV could be scheduled for November, though a location has not been decided. Said July 19 winners (Barnett, Arlovski, Fedor) would likely be included.
* Said swing bout (featuring Justin Levans and Ray Lizama) "didn't fit" due to time constraints. Nothing was wrong with the fighters.
* Interested in focusing on lighter weights in the future. Mentioned Strikeforce promoter Scott Coker and Adrenaline promoter Monte Cox as two individuals the company was interested in working with.
* California State Athletic Commission did not inform Affliction why Aleksander Emelianenko's license to fight was not granted. Hopes to work with Aleksander in the future.
* "First and foremost I'm a fan of MMA." Credits fandom with help booking fights people want to see. Not concerned whether matches are "right or wrong."
Bad idea to try to showcase lighter fighters. Stick with heavyweights, since they have them in spades. Most lighter fighters already fight for DREAM and WEC, which put on better shows than Affliction. Affliction should make the heavyweights and maybe even the super heavyweights their bread and butter.
